As we close out #NationalGroundwaterAwarenessWeek, we reflect on its mission—to educate, inspire, and advocate for the protection and sustainable management of this vital resource. To do so, we asked a few of our #groundwater specialists what got them into careers and why it matters to them. Lauren Gordon, P.G. Chris Petersen Solidea Bonina, Ph.D. Tom Daigle, P.G.

For Ginger Gillin, Vice President and Principal Environmental Scientist at #TeamGEI, the journey into water was one of persistence, passion, and purpose. As a young girl, she was told "we don’t hire girls for that." But that didn’t stop her. Ginger pursued a career in fisheries biology, driven by a love for science and the outdoors. Over time, her expertise evolved, leading her into the world of #hydropower regulation and #environmental compliance, where she works to balance clean energy with environmental protection. Her career has grown alongside the industry—once a rare sight, today she leads project meetings filled with women scientists, engineers, and planners, proving that the face of water is changing. In 2022, she was honored with the Women with HydroVision award, a testament to her impact in the field. Through it all, Ginger’s story is a powerful reminder of how determination and passion can shape not just a career, but an entire industry. Every career has defining moments—experiences that shape how we grow, lead, and make an impact. As part of GEI’s #WomeninWater series, we’re spotlighting #TeamGEI's Laura Verhaeghe, P.Eng., a Senior Project Manager in Infrastructure Planning, whose journey in #water has been guided by curiosity, #resilience, and a commitment to sustainable communities. Laura’s path started with an interest in medicine, but a fascination with biological engineering led her to a career in wastewater infrastructure—an essential field for public health and #sustainability. Early in her career, she faced the challenge of stepping into a technical sales role as an introvert, learning a powerful lesson: “You know more about this technology than anyone else in the room. Trust yourself.” Over the years, Laura has seen more women rise into leadership in wastewater engineering, though she notes construction still has room for growth. Progress is happening, and she’s proud to be part of the change. Join us in celebrating Laura and all the women making waves in water! #WomenMakingWaves #infrastructure

As we celebrate National Women’s History Month, we reflect on the incredible women who have shaped our communities, industries, and futures. This week, we’re spotlighting Monica Malone, PE, CFM, a Senior Water Resources Engineer in our Dallas office, as part of GEI’s #WomenInWater series. Monica believes this month is a time to recognize the achievements of trailblazing women and share their stories with the next generation. One such pioneer is Hattie Peterson, the first female African-American civil engineer in the U.S., whose work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers paved the way for Black women in engineering. Monica also shares gratitude for Dr. Karen Butler-Purry, a professor and mentor who shaped her career and the careers of many other future STEM leaders. Join us in celebrating Monica and all the women who are making an impact in the water industry. To learn more about Monica, check out her bio on our website:?https://lnkd.in/gtK2hq_7
