Jake Loosararian’s billion-dollar journey began with a “don’t do it” warning from trusted mentors and family. As a student at Grove City College in 2012, Jake and his electrical engineering team built a 40-pound robot designed to climb and scan power plant walls, detecting costly cracks and corrosion. Their invention saved the plant tens of millions, sparking Jake’s entrepreneurial vision. Despite skepticism and daunting odds—limited experience, no funding, and grim hardware startup success rates—Jake co-founded Gecko Robotics in 2013. His focus? A niche market: critical infrastructure inspections. He believed he’d discovered a “secret hiding in plain sight.” The road was grueling. Jake worked 100-hour weeks, scraped together $30,000 to fund his dream, and endured sleeping on friends’ floors while navigating the harsh environments of power plant boilers. Several times, he nearly gave up. Fast forward to today, Gecko Robotics boasts $220M in funding, a $633M valuation, and recognition as #42 on the 2024 CNBC Disruptor 50 List.
