Supporting Global scale up of electric cooking, from niche technology to mainstream living
关于我们
The Global electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCo) is comprised of eCooking advocates who work alongside other existing global and national initiatives promoting higher-tier cooking transitions by providing leadership, integration, knowledge, and funding that is exclusively focused on the rapid global scaling of electric cooking. The coalition represents a working group of partners and provides a platform for engagement to unify work, avoid duplication and optimise output quality. According to the latest 2023 SDG7 Tracking Report some 2.3 billion people globally still cook using traditional polluting fuels and technologies. In fact, the ESMAP 2020 report The State of Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services (our emphasis) identified 4 billion as not having access to modern energy cooking (higher tier stoves that have such low household air pollution that they don’t affect health). While black carbon emissions dissipate quickly, their impacts are far-reaching. The WHO estimates that premature deaths from indoor air pollution total nearly 3.2 million annually, including about 237,000 children under the age of five who are more prone to pneumonia due to smoke exposure. In addition, annually a gigaton of CO2 emissions comes from burning non-renewable biomass fuels for cooking (about 2 per cent of the global total and equivalent to the amount produced by the aviation sector), whilst the burning of residential solid fuels comprises 58 per cent of global black carbon emissions. As household smoke is therefore both an agent of climate change and air pollution, substantial scale up of electric cooking solutions.

Management Team, Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme. Accelerating access to clean, electric cooking on a global scale.
A new blog 'eCooking in School Kitchens - A Recipe for Sustainability and Decarbonisation in Nepal and Beyond' has been launched. In order to accelerate urgently needed transitions to electric cooking (eCooking) and the multiple health, environmental, social and economic benefits they can bring, it makes sense to target interventions which can be achieved comparatively easily, cost effectively and that reach large numbers of people. A growing body of research highlights how eCooking initiatives in schools and childcare facilities particularly meet this criteria as they typically: - have simple, consistent menus that match the strengths of eCooking appliances;? - cook outside of peak electricity demand hours, meaning eCooking transitions are unlikely to overburden networks and may provide additional revenue for utilities where eCooking absorbs daytime surplus electricity generation. - have relatively low eCooking implementation costs and can take a longer term view of returns on investment;? - can play an educational role to raise awareness in communities and provide showcasing opportunities; - and have potential to efficiently deliver a range of social, environmental, and health benefits to large numbers of people. Drawing on these points, this blog highlights how?delivering eCooking in schools is in many ways relatively straightforward to achieve and should be more actively and dynamically pursued. Focussing on Nepal, this blog calls for?school eCooking transitions to be a?much more prominent part of the country’s policy framework, complementing existing national policy commitments to household eCooking and the Government’s free school meal programme. This call is particularly timely given the key policy document shaping Nepal’s eCooking and broader climate ambitions, the ‘Third Nationally Determined Contribution Plan’ (Third NDC), is currently under development for release this year. So often, there is an assumption that eCooking in developing regions is somehow 'putting the cart before the horse'. MECS programme attempts to dispel some of the myths and (incorrect) assumptions around eCooking, to demonstrate how developing countries might leapfrog interim technologies and capitalise on renewable energy sources
Struggling to imagine if electric cooking could work in Africa? You're not alone. It raises eyebrows and sparks scepticism for many. That's why we're tackling the boldest, most uncomfortable questions we receive to show what it truly takes to make eCooking a reality across the continent. Very interesting results on this MECS programme report. “eCooking is feasible and cost-effective in many mini-grid contexts and can enable cost savings for consumers and increased profitability for mini-grid operators. Its benefits are particularly evident when it is integrated into mini-grid planning from the start.” We should always include #CleanCooking in #EnergyAccess pre-feasibility studies. Cooking must be integrated as a key energy demand in the planning and regulation of energy systems, especially those serving low-income communities. In fact, cooking often represents the highest energy demand in these households. Without clean cooking, there can be no true #JustEnergyTransition.

New publication just launched! A new MECS briefing note, by Will Clements, Simon Batchelor and Jerome Nsengiyaremye, summarises the findings of 7 MECS challenge fund projects across 7 different countries which developed business plans for integrating eCooking into planned or existing mini-grids, including technical & financial modelling. The briefing note summarises key findings of the Cooking Support on Mini-grids (COSMO) Phase 1 Synthesis Report. The conclusion of the Synthesis Report is that eCooking is feasible and cost-effective in many mini-grid contexts and can enable cost savings for consumers and increased profitability for mini-grid operators. Its benefits are particularly evident when it is integrated into mini-grid planning from the start. Comprehensive and realistic technical and financial modelling assessing different levels of eCooking penetration and usage is essential for determining mini-grid upgrade requirements and resulting financial feasibility.
