One of the benefits of booking travel through a travel agent is that we can sit on the phone with suppliers to get you rebooked when a flight cancellation arises, or update transport services, meet up points, etc. when travel hiccups occur. 2. Tune into updates. Be sure to hang around your gate to hear updates on delays. Sometimes, problems can be resolved quicker than anticipated and you don’t want to miss boarding because you left the area. 3. Seek alternative routes. When delays or cancellations surpass a certain time it may be more beneficial to look for alternative avenues to get to your destination, such as renting a car and driving. 4. Ask about compensation. A new law requires airlines to automatically refund passengers for cancelled and “significant” delayed flights. If you fall into this category, ask the gate agent about your refund, and if the airline can cover the cost of lodging or food if your plans are disrupted significantly. 5. Hold onto essentials. By planning ahead and keeping essentials in your carry-on luggage, such as medication and chargers, you can avoid the stress of being separated from must-haves in your checked baggage. 6. Entertain yourself.
