We’re thrilled to announce a significant achievement by the AGC Plasma team with the successful production of a silicon anode roll on a MWh-scale roll-to-roll line in Germany! AGC Group is proud to help GDI become one of two companies in the world (Amprius Technologies, Inc. being the other) to show 100% silicon anode production at MWh scale! This silicon anode features high-tensile copper foil from SCHLENK, coated with the AGC PlasmaMAX? plasma coating system. PlasmaMAX?, an ultra-high rate Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) solution, efficiently converts silane gas into amorphous silicon with unprecedented precursor utilization. AGC Plasma is proud to provide this advanced technology to Graphenix Development Inc (GDI), based in New York, with planning underway for launching a Gigascale 100% silicon anode production factory for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. Another strong article from Sifted' Freya Pratty including our CEO Rob Anstey. As Pratty writes: “Graphite is already game over” Elsewhere in the climate tech world, others remain convinced that Europe needs to go it alone to shore up its battery supply chain. In Rob Anstey's view, the extent of China’s battery plans is yet to be realised by the rest of the world. “China is going to vertically integrate the entire industry and eventually they will probably stop selling batteries and only selling vehicles,” he says. Should Europe fail to set up its battery production and that were to happen, the continent would then have to buy actual vehicles directly from China. Competing with China on existing battery composition is futile, Anstey says, meaning European production needs to switch to forms of battery that Chinese companies are yet to dominate.
