This week, during Black History Month, we would ?? literally?? be lost without Gladys West and her work on the modern GPS system. Born in Virginia to tobacco farmers, she received a scholarship to Virginia State College, and earned a bachelor's and a master's degree in mathematics. She later was hired by the U.S Naval Proving Ground, where she worked on solving complex mathematical equations, and programmed computers to do the same calculations. In 1978, West was named project manager of Seasat, a satellite that provided data on ocean conditions and features. Out of this work came GEOSAT, which was a satellite that created computer models of Earth. Later updates of GEOSAT allowed the modern GPS to make accurate calculations of locations on Earth. February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month, which is a celebration of African American contributions, achievements and culture. Within the telecommunications industry, we would not be where we are without Lewis Howard Latimer. Born in 1848, Latimer taught himself mechanical drawing, later working for Alexander Graham Bell. He refined the transmitter on the first telephone, which increased sound quality, and was crucial in securing the telephone patent. He later worked with Thomas Edison on the first lightbulb, and had seven patents of his own, including one for an early air conditioning unit.
