Our firm was founded with a vision to provide client-centered design solutions through a collaborative delivery model. Garvin Design Group knows that engaging clients, construction partners, and designers in the process is vital to its success. Our collaborative process ensures that stakeholders’ needs are heard and achieved and that ownership of the finished product is a shared experience. A successful project is born of a cooperative, enjoyable process resulting in functional, beautiful spaces. Garvin Design Group has been a design leader in the Midlands since its founding in 2003 when we first hung our shingle at Columbia’s historic AIS Building at the corner of Lincoln and Gervais Streets. Our firm's original members worked with Scott Garvin before the company’s inception, providing deep roots in time-tested relationships. Starting with minuscule projects, we soon found opportunities in a range of project types and scales, from historic rehabilitations and higher education work to commercial office and hospitality projects to retail upfits and private schools, quickly expanding into various markets throughout South Carolina and beyond. Our firm prides itself on an expanding portfolio of work in architecture, interiors, and planning spanning diverse markets, but more so is proud of and thankful for the relationships created through the years. Over the course of its twenty-year history, Garvin Design Group has become a trusted and respected guide in the design and construction process. We are grateful for the opportunities our firm has been granted and look forward to continuing our role in shaping the built environment and fostering long-standing and new relationships alike. We are proud to be the 2019 recipient of AIA South Carolina's prestigious Firm Award.

Inspired by the successful adaptive reuse of Columbia's Olympia and Granby Mills, the rehabilitation of 701 Whaley revived the mill village's historic community center. 701 Whaley had long served as a hub of mill village civic life, home to a basketball court, swimming pool, barbershop, canteen, billiard room, and hand hall before it feel into disrepair and sat vacant for many years. Careful removal of the modern infill and restoration of deteriorated historic fabric brought the building back to life as a vibrant community space. This project leveraged federal, state, and local historic tax credits and won multiple awards for adaptive reuse and historic preservation. Camp Cole's new Southeastern Freight Lines Activity Center supports year-round programming for individuals with disabilities and life challenges, enhancing Camp Cole's mission to provide transformative experiences for children of all abilities. This recently completed 20,000-sf "Artnasium" includes a gymnasium, art studio, library, movement studio, sensory gym, ample porches, a canteen, and staff support spaces. Designed for accessibility and inclusivity, the building features an open floor plan, glass garage doors for an open-air environment, and fixtures and finishes that ensure accessibility for all. Today we're celebrating 21 years with Mark Timbes, AIA, LEED AP BD+C. Mark joined our firm in August of 2003 and became a Principal in 2006. He has been an integral part of our firm's success, leading many of our transformational projects. These include additions and renovations to the Peace Center in Greenville, University of South Carolina's Honors Residence Hall, Coastal Carolina University's HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center, and many large-scale hospitality projects on the South Carolina coast. Mark is also a leader in the Columbia community, devoting countless hours in board service to organizations like Able South Carolina, Columbia College (SC), and AIA South Carolina.
