?? Welcome to Garland ISD ?? We are thrilled to announce that Joseph (Joe) Parks has joined Garland ISD as our new Director of Employee Relations! With a unique background in workplace investigations, school district safety and operations, law enforcement, and employment law, Joe previously served more than a decade as an Executive Director for Plano ISD, where his responsibilities included directing workplace investigations, safety, and security, applicant criminal history reviews and other areas of district operations. Parks is an honorably retired command-level peace officer with over 20 years of diverse public safety experience and a TEA Registered Provider of continuing education training for school boards. A licensed attorney since 2004, Parks previously practiced employment law and commercial litigation with a mid-sized Dallas law firm. He is originally from Houston and graduated from Texas A&M University (B.A., Political Science) and SMU Dedman School of Law (Juris Doctor). Parks regularly speaks and presents on workplace investigations, HR/compliance issues, school safety, and school based law enforcement. My internship at Garland Independent School District (GISD) offered an invaluable opportunity to gain practical human resources experience. Guided by three SMART goals—improving interview scheduling efficiency, optimizing the onboarding process, and adopting best practices in HR records management—I made significant strides in each area. For interview scheduling, I initially assisted with interview preparations, updated screening summaries, and pre-screened candidates. This foundational work helped me understand the complexities of scheduling. Over time, I streamlined the process by efficiently organizing documentation and monitoring interview scores. My involvement in online orientation meetings further developed my systematic approach to interview logistics, leading to enhanced efficiency. Optimizing the onboarding process was another focus. By shadowing a staffing specialist and engaging in various onboarding activities, I gained insights into current practices and identified areas for improvement. My contributions included preparing PAR templates and assisting with new employee orientation, ensuring a smooth integration process for new hires. In HR records management, I focused on organizing and updating records to improve documentation accuracy. My tasks included finalizing interview documentation, conducting inventory checks, and preparing screening documents. These activities reinforced the importance of meticulous record-keeping and compliance. Throughout the internship, I learned the importance of effective communication, adaptability, attention to detail, and continuous learning. I also recognized the value of seeking feedback and engaging in self-reflection. These lessons have significantly contributed to my professional growth. Reflecting on my experience, I would have proactively sought more feedback, explored cross-departmental collaboration, and maintained a detailed journal of my activities and reflections. These steps would have enhanced my learning and contributions. Overall, my HR internship at Garland Independent School District (GISD) was a transformative experience, equipping me with essential skills and insights to inform my future human resources endeavors. #UTDMSMSc
