The number one challenge in Geotechnical Engineering is that soil, as an engineering material, is consistently inconsistent. No two soils behave the same way, which makes understanding what lies beneath your site essential for project success. Saving a few dollars up front on geotechnical investigation can lead to much higher costs during design and construction, not to mention unnecessary risks. Call us or visit our website before you break ground—or even after, if things don't go as planned. We help minimize risk without breaking the bank. Mass soil mixing, like this technique from ALLU Group, is a powerful method to transform soft, weak soils into a material strong enough to support structures. By mechanically mixing a cementitious binder (either wet slurry or dry powder) into the soil, this process creates a hybrid material that enhances strength and stiffness. Long-term creep is negligible, and it’s often more cost-effective than soil exchange, especially when working below the water table. Let us help you design and implement this efficient solution. Overcoming Organic Soil Challenges with Grouted Stone Columns Vibro Stone Columns (VSC) or Aggregate Piers (AP) can enhance bearing capacity and control settlement in nearly any soil type. However, when soils contain organic layers or are extremely soft, VSC/AP performance may decline. To address this, grouted stone columns (GSC) are used, adding internal cohesion through cementation. GSC can span soft or organic layers effectively without compromising performance. In this project, Michels Corporation is constructing a GSC system designed by Garbin GeoStructural Group for an organic-laden site in Madison, WI. Using a PTC - Fayat Group bottom-feed vibrolance, the team installs columns with grout batched onsite to prevent delays. GSC installs as efficiently as VSC/AP, and full-scale load testing confirms the system’s success. Contact #DoctorEd at (844) 4-GeoDoc or [email protected] When You Can't Afford to be Wrong. Can You Solve This? ?? What's the Minimum Strength for a 16-Inch Rigid Inclusion Supporting 160,000 lbs? ???? #MathMonday Rigid Inclusions (RI) are a versatile ground improvement technique, especially beneficial for constructing shallow foundations on soft soils. Typically composed of grouted elements, RIs can efficiently support large-area loads, such as MSE walls, roadway embankments, and above-ground storage tanks. Depending on project needs, they can be designed as either end-bearing or floating elements and constructed from various strong materials capable of withstanding the applied loads. For this week’s MathMonday: What is the minimum unconfined compressive strength required for a 16-inch diameter RI designed to support a load of 160,000 lbs without crushing? In-situ materials can be effectively used to construct earth retention systems through multi-axis soil mixing, as showcased by Raito Incorporated. A common application involves designing soldier pile and lagging systems, where the mixed soil itself is utilized as the lagging material. This technique is especially beneficial for zero-lot-line projects, sites sensitive to vibrations or noise, and locations where soils are too unstable to stand vertically when excavated. 6000 psf Load, 5 Piers, 1 Question: What's the Maximum Stress? The largest spread footing for a new mid-rise office building measures 10 ft by 10 ft and is designed for a bearing capacity of 6,000 psf. To improve the soil, aggregate piers (24 inches in diameter) are used, with this footing sitting atop 5 aggregate piers. For #MathMonday, what is the maximum stress in 1 aggregate pier in the group, given that the pier reaction modulus is 120 psi/in and the soil reaction modulus is 40 psi/in? Bonus: How much will the foundation settle if the 15-ft deep piers are founded on a thick, competent rock deposit? Answer below or reply "No idea!" if you're stuck. Happy Monday!
