Our mothers, our waters, our peace by Korean American artist Gyun Hur reflects upon the Atlanta Asian community’s resilience and love. Created in response to the escalation of Asian hate crimes during the pandemic, followed by the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, Hur’s project explores grief by inviting communities to reflect on their immigrant experience and offering a way for them to heal. A music score by Hahn Rowe accompanies the installation. Last year, Hur began installing glass vessels within public and private spaces amongst Asian American communities. Holding local river or creek water, a total of 100 dispersed glass sculptures have served to seed conversations around intergenerational work and healing. Hur will recollect these vessels to create a communal site of reflection, gathering, and connection at Goat Farm. In the spirit of remembrance, lamentation, and celebration, “Our mothers, our waters, our peace” will remain on view for two weeks and offer performances, workshops, and artist talks – all free to the public. Our mothers, our waters, our peace, Gyun Hur’s immersive installation of more than 125 handblown, tear-shaped glass vessels, opens at the Goat Farm on Saturday, March 15 and showing until Sunday, March 30. Our mothers, our water, our peace is commissioned by Flux Projects. To learn more visit fluxprojects.org or follow us on social media @fluxprojects. It's been 4 years since the March 16th Atlanta #AAPI Spa Shootings. #GAPABA remembers: "The shootings sparked a nationwide reckoning with anti-Asian violence, leading to increased advocacy and political engagement within the AAPI community. Bonnie Youn of the Georgia Asian American Bar Association (GAPABA) noted that the tragedy, coupled with the rise in hate incidents during the pandemic, had a profound impact on Georgia’s political landscape. “It was the result of nationwide racism during the COVID-19 pandemic and the March 16 tragedy that deeply impacted the Asian American communities,” Ms. Youn said. “The rise of hatred and social violence has prompted 13 AAPI individuals to be elected to the Georgia Assembly, the largest number ever elected in the state’s history.” READ: https://lnkd.in/ejsqGWYz

On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, #GAPABA celebrated the Year of the Serpent at our annual Lunar New Banquet & Leadership Installation Ceremony. Held for the first time OTP at the fabulous new Canton House event space in Gwinnett County, it was our largest LNY ever with more than 300 attendees. Justice Carla Wong McMillian of the Supreme Court of Georgia did the honors of inducting our new GAPABA Leadership. With festive lion dancers and a Year of the Snake martial arts showcase presented by Phoenix Wellness Arts, our attendees flashed red hongbao envelopes and chowed down on a delicious multi-course meal. Over four dozen elected officials, judges, and VIPs were recognized during the event. In addition to the swearing-in ceremony, GAPABA presented the 2025 Han C. Choi Mentor Award to Dean Usha Rodrigues of the The University of Georgia School of Law. Dean Rodrigues is a trailblazer -- she is the first AAPI law school dean in the State of Georgia. Fun door prizes included a Lunar New Year barbie and a gold money tree.
