Last week we revealed the?Kickstarter for Dungeon Rampage (https://lnkd.in/gvWTvvD2), the online multiplayer game we’ve been meticulously reviving over the past few months. We were lucky to secure the IP license, but we still have plenty of work ahead of us. ?? The Good We have the original code base for the game, and it’s quite well written (shoutout original dev team). After porting the server and platform to Kubernetes we were able to get the server and platform up and running again. We’ll need a little more effort to modernize a few systems, but otherwise we’re in good shape. ?? The Challenging The frontend is written entirely in Flash, which was shut down many years ago. Flash was a perfect choice for a Facebook game in 2013, but for us today we’d be a little more comfortable in a modern game engine. We have the game back up and running, but there are still a handful of bugs from packaging the flash project to EXE. Shoutout to our flash expert Tyler Wright for helping us dust the cobwebs off this old project. ?? The Risky There is a Discord server with 40k+ players of the original game, anxiously awaiting our remaster. Having an existing community for a game is absolutely huge, but if we're not careful we risk disappointing the game's most passionate fans. Good thing we’re going to make them happy. As a company, our mission has always been to bring people together through games. Our specialization in Online Games made this the perfect project for us to flex our skills and bring players together for a fun time. Have fun out there at GDC this week everyone! #gamedev #gdc

DICE insights from our very own Taylor Hellam
My first DICE was an absolute blast. It was great to meet so many folks and talk about making games. Sadly that was the primary trend I saw at DICE, a lot of TALKING about making games, but not very much actual development. Well not funded development at least ?? ?? UNEXPECTED OBSERVATIONS ?? I've never heard so many people talking about DevOps. I assume outsourcing DevOps is one way studios are attempting to cut costs. On the tech side, there are many reusable pieces of DevOps code you can use between game projects. We had the same insight ~5 years ago after setting up a dozen build systems for various studios. It led us to build our own managed build system, BespokeCI. We've been affordably helping folks ship games on our tech for 4 years now ?? https://bespokeci.dev/ ?? FUNDING ?? Okay this isn't really breaking news, but studios are still struggling to find funding for new projects. VC backing last quarter was the lowest it's been since the start of COVID, and publishers are continuing to be incredibly risk-averse. Most of the funded folks I chatted with got their budget from independently wealthy individuals. If anyone knows any rich people who want to make a game please send them my contact info ?? ??? BUDGET / SCOPE ??? It appears we're in for another year of cost-cutting and reduced project scopes. Something interesting (and I'm definitely biased), given the increased scrutiny around team sizes, folks have been relying on smaller core team sizes. More studios are now counting on Co-Development studios to expand their capacity. ??this is a good sign for the future of Gamebreaking Studios and other similarly-sized Co-Dev shops. ?? CLOSING ?? Anyway that's my 2 cents about DICE. I'm still incredibly excited about the future of Gamebreaking. Hopefully GTA 6 launches and makes so much money that everyone starts throwing money back into games ??
