Dengue Alert: What You Need to Know Dengue cases are rising in the U.S. and worldwide, with a sharp increase in 2024 and 2025. The virus spreads through mosquito bites and can cause severe illness, especially in infants, pregnant women, older adults, and those with existing health conditions. Key Updates: ?? High-Risk Areas: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are experiencing outbreaks. Locally acquired cases have also been reported in Florida, California, and Texas. ?? Travel & Risk: Spring and summer travel increase the chances of bringing dengue back to the U.S. Travelers to affected areas should take precautions. ?? Testing & Detection: The CDC recommends specific lab tests for suspected dengue cases. Early diagnosis is crucial. ?? Public Health Response: Health officials are monitoring the situation and providing new resources to manage and prevent outbreaks. Protect Yourself: ? Over three days, our Galveston Area Ambulance Authority staff participated in EMS frontline training. They learned about various communicable diseases from the The University of Texas Medical Branch Biocontainment Care Unit team. Staff was educated on how to handle different situations, important information, and behind-the-scenes processes. Thank you to the UTMB Special Pathogens Excellence in Clinical Treatment, Readiness, & Education (SPECTRE) program for all your help and the training!
