This year's Abandoned Crab Trap Removal was a success with 71 traps removed from Trinity Bay! While we didn't make it in time for nine blue crabs and fish, we are happy to report that we were able to spare the lives of 15 blue crabs, which were released back into the Bay. Thank you to all the volunteers, especially Riddhi Chheda and Mike Savage, the 9 vessels that helped us remove traps, and to all our incredible partners: TEXSAR: Texas Search and Rescue, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Game Wardens, Chambers County Sheriff's Department, Chambers County Solid Waste, Chambers County Parks and Recreation Department, and?America's Boating Club? March is #DolphinAwarenessMonth, so we're sharing some fascinating facts about our Bay bottlenose dolphins! Did you know?? ?? Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are the only marine mammals regularly found in Galveston Bay? ?? Our Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program (GDRP) has studied dolphins in the Bay for 10+ years and has identified over 1000 unique dolphins!? ?? Bottlenose dolphins live in societies characterized by “fission-fusion” dynamics, like us. This means that they spend time with different individuals depending on various factors, like their age, and the activity they are engaged in, similar to how we might socialize with different groups at school or work.? ???? Galveston Bay bottlenose dolphins do not stay in “pods” - a pod is a permanent, family group that is always together. Last Friday, we officially broke ground on The Gessner Center, our future home by the Bay! ?? ? A formal ceremony was held, led by our President, Bob Stokes, along with our friends at Kirksey Architecture, Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, Drake Environmental, TBG Partners, CMTA, Inc., Pinnacle Structural Engineers, DDG, Skanska, and City of Kemah?officials, to commemorate this significant milestone. ? The Gessner Center has been made possible thanks to a generous donation made by Barbara and Andy Gessner, who joined us at the groundbreaking, and subsequent donations from our community of supporters and donors.? ? We look forward to completing this state-of-the-art, eco-friendly facility on Galveston Bay and will keep you updated on our progress! ?? ? Are you a boater with a shallow draft boat? We need your help!? Join us on Saturday, Feb. 22nd, from 8:30-11:30am, along with our good friends at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, for a coast-wide effort to remove lost or abandoned crab traps in Trinity Bay.? These abandoned traps can cause significant harm to marine life and create navigational hazards for boaters. THANK YOU to everyone who joined us to celebrate 10 years of the Galveston Bay Report Card at our community cleanup last Saturday! ? Together with HARC | Houston Advanced Research Center, we worked to remove litter and debris from Brock Adventure Park - the future site of one of our NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration-funded trash booms. Thanks to our 22 volunteers, we filled up 41 bags of trash, weighing a whopping 1,494 pounds! ? As we reflect on 10 years of the Galveston Bay Report Card, we're humbled by the support we've received over the last decade from our community and partners. ? The report card is something we look forward to each year. It lets us know how our Bay is doing and helps us pinpoint areas of resilience and concern. ? We're grateful to all our volunteers, partners, supporters, and citizen scientists, for helping make our Bay a better place, one grade at a time. ?? ? 168 acres CONSERVED! ?? We're excited to share that our team just permanently protected 168 acres near the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge.? Known as the Anahuac Wetlands Mitigation Bank, this project adds connected habitat to our East Bay Conservation Initiative Area, supporting various shorebirds, waterfowl, amphibians, and native plant communities. #Conservation #LandConservation #Wetlands
