Polkadot Just Ran Doom Fully On-Chain! This feels like big news... Angela's post about Gavin Wood running Doom fully on-chain using JAM (Join-Accumulate-Machine) caught my attention over the weekend. The implications seem significant—not just for Web3 gaming, but for the decentralized web more broadly. Given Doom was the demo choice, I first hit the potential impacts on gaming, then discuss the broader applications, and realistic hurdles. Running Doom without any blockchain-specific modifications demonstrates JAM’s ability to host games built for common architectures like RISC-V, C, C++, and Rust. Its reported performance significantly surpasses Ethereum, suggesting JAM could enable sophisticated, graphics-rich games to operate fully on-chain. Additionally, JAM's impressive 1.6 petabytes of decentralized storage reduces dependency on centralized servers, significantly decreasing risks related to outages or censorship. With Doom running smoothly at 30 FPS and potential for even higher performance, scalability looks promising. Now some skepticism: Running older games like Doom is one thing, but modern AAA titles may prove too demanding for full on-chain execution. Blockchain gaming also remains niche due to complexity, user experience challenges, and scalability concerns. Many gamers might still prefer centralized platforms due to their convenience, performance, and simplicity. Additionally, the economic viability of hosting games entirely on-chain is still unclear. Yet beyond gaming, JAM's potential is vast. It could emerge as a genuine competitor to traditional cloud giants like AWS and Google Cloud, supporting decentralized alternatives to streaming services like Netflix or YouTube. Its transparent computing environment may also democratize AI and big data analytics. Furthermore, enterprise and scientific sectors could benefit significantly from robust, decentralized high-performance computing solutions. What about competitive protocols? I'd say that compared to platforms like Ethereum, Solana, and ICP, which face inherent limitations in general-purpose computing, JAM uniquely combines decentralization, superior performance, and flexibility through architectures such as RISC-V, potentially placing it ahead of the other obvious candidates. Ultimately, gaming adoption will hinge on developers and gamers seeing clear benefits. I'm cautiously optimistic about how quickly the gaming community might embrace Web3 (but I certainly believe it's going to happen eventually). Beyond gaming, however, JAM feels like a meaningful advancement for decentralized computing and the broader Web3 ecosystem. Conclusion: Running Doom fully on-chain is exciting—but I’m even more intrigued by what's next.

DOOM Decentralized When I tell people that I have been excited about the games industry since my first E3 twenty years ago, they are usually wondering if I play First Person Shooters (FPS) like DOOM. The unsurprising answer is no (even though I do love fashion battle games!????) I still remember the cold, hard fear I felt while watching the latest version of DOOM on the mega screen at my first games conference. We are students of emerging technologies and behavior change, and new technologies are typically first used in the cutting edge environment of video games. While you can find examples in the early 1950s of AI in video games, AI really became prolific commercially in the 1970-1980s with games like Pong and Pac-Man. What happened this weekend?! An historic technological breakthrough was demonstrated when Gavin Wood (@gavofyork) demonstrated DOOM running on a Decentralized Web Services Machine. This isn’t about the game DOOM, but rather about demonstrating a regular application that can run on Polkadot. This is important because a blockchain by itself can't typically run regular applications since there is only so much “work” that can be done by a single block. Shawn Tabrizi explained, “This proves Polkadot is not simply a blockchain. It is a fully fledged, decentralized supercomputer.” This opens the door to all kinds of applications living on chain, which was never before possible. @Pala_Labs said, “JAM shows blockchains can go beyond transactions, enabling decentralized computing with continuous execution flow. It’s a breakthrough moment for Web3 computing.” Emil Keitzman explained - This wasn't a modified version of Doom to put it on the blockchain - just the original game recompiled to target the Polkadot Virtual Machine (PVM). PVM powers JAM's computational layer (like EVM in Ethereum). The demo proved JAM can handle general-purpose computation, not just blockchain-specific tasks. @Alice_und_Bob also breaks it down in several ways - Today developers have to think very constrained. They have to write code that fits inside a block. On short transactions. Gavin’s invention removes that limitation and opens it up to write any program on JAM. It proves you can run normal software on a fully on-chain Virtual Machine - without modifications. Any app!!! This isn’t just about gaming. It’s a glimpse into a future where entire applications run trustless & decentralized. You cannot overstate how significant this is! Why did Gavin choose DOOM? I haven’t spoken to him but it is poetic. The DOOM engine, used to make the game in 1993, had a major impact on the future. Even 30 years later, its DNA is deeply embedded in game development, given its technical ingenuity. It inspired modern shooter mechanics, the foundations of online competitive gaming, engine cross platform support, and even the earliest glimpses of UGC (User Generated Content.)

Huge congratulations to Ian Proulx and the entire 1047 Games team on a fantastic open alpha for Splitgate 2! The response from players has been incredible, and this review is just one of many examples of the excitement and enthusiasm we saw during playtesting. The original Splitgate introduced a groundbreaking mix of Halo and Portal-style mechanics, and Splitgate 2 takes it even further—refining the core gameplay, adding new strategic depth with classes, and delivering a level of polish that sets it apart in the FPS space. I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead as we get closer to launch later this year. If you haven’t been paying attention to Splitgate 2, now’s the time. Check out the great write-up, below… #Splitgate2 #1047Games #FPS #GamingInnovation #VentureCapital

  • The extraction genre in gaming, where players risk everything to extract high-value loot, has historically been limited by its hardcore nature. But the space is evolving in exciting ways:? ? ? Accessibility is key: Forward-thinking companies are reimagining onboarding systems and creating low-stakes practice zones to welcome new players without sacrificing complexity.? ? ? Balance, not dilution: The future isn't about removing tension; it's about smart design choices like flexible sessions and optional insurance systems that maintain thrills while reducing frustration.? ? ? Community transformation: By fostering positive player interactions through cooperative objectives, developers are addressing the perceived toxicity that has limited the genre's appeal.? ? At Galaxy Interactive, we’re excited about how these innovations broaden the genre’s appeal while staying true to its core. The extraction space is at a fascinating crossroads of accessibility and engagement, and we’re watching closely.? ? Read our latest perspective by Mustafa Kamal here: https://hubs.li/Q0393gs_0??
