Zero waste management policies such as waste separation, recycling, and composting could cut total methane emissions from the waste sector by 84% or more than 1.4 billion tonnes, equivalent to the annual emissions of 300 million cars - or taking all motor vehicles in the U.S. off the road for a year. Our communities have known and been practicing zero waste for many decades now. It is time for policymakers and financiers to channel resources towards implementing and replicating successful, community-led zero waste initiatives that offer the most substantial climate mitigation outcomes. I am here together with colleagues from the GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives). The clue is that a comprehensive waste management system should integrate the community-based solutions, accessible and decentralized. These prove to be inclusive, delivering multiple additional benefits, and respectful to the informal waste sector.
