Digital accessibility is full of abbreviations and acronyms. A11Y, ADA, WCAG, A/AA/AAA, uh... So, I thought that the time has come to refresh the knowledge, and one of the best ways to do that is to write an article. By the way, I've utilized HTML description lists (<dl>) along with terms (<dt>) and descriptions (<dd>) to ensure the best possible semantics for the content. Acknowledging viewport vs resolution discrepancies: an update to Understanding SC 1.4.10: Reflow (Level AA). In audit reports, I sometimes find that people test SC 1.4.10: Reflow by setting the browser's viewport width to 1280 CSS pixels and zooming to 400% instead of testing with a viewport that is actually 320 CSS pixels wide. They justify this by pointing to the note below the success criterion that says, "320 CSS pixels is equivalent to a starting viewport width of 1280 CSS pixels wide at 400% zoom." Hey, y’all. Last week, I shared a link about using keyboard navigation as a quick way to assess the accessibility of a digital experience. Once you’ve done that, you probably want to fix any broken keyboard navigation that you found. Start with the navigation regions on the page – you know, the nav bar in the header, or the links in small print in the footer. Fix those first. Accessibility Tip of the Day 339: Here's a top 3 list of common accessibility mistakes I often see engineers make and how to resolve them. Most of them deal with understanding which component should be used in various scenarios: 1. Click handlers on interactive elements - DON'T add onClick to presentational elements like View or HStack that aren’t meant to be interactive. (These components may not exist in your specific design system of choice, but they're essentially just div elements.) - DO use interactive elements like Button or those that have interactive ARIA roles. These elements convey their semantic meaning to assistive technology like screen readers and can be operated with a keyboard. 2. Tooltip vs. Popover - DO use Tooltip for short, non-interactive content (appears on hover/focus and does not send focus into the tooltip content). - DO use Popover for longer, interactive content (appears on click/keypress, and does send focus into the popover content). 3. Menu vs. Select (Dropdowns) - DO use Menu for triggering actions. - DO use Select for selecting values, like in a form. #accessibility #a11y #accessibilityTipOfTheDay

I’m starting to think about Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). It’s on 15th May this year, so it’s not that far away! Like last year, I’m blocking out some time to help others with their GAAD efforts. I’m particularly keen to help folks who are trying to get their accessibility initiatives off the ground, or those trying to keep momentum going.
