When I founded #A11yDMV a bit more then two years ago, I wanted to create a space for #accessibility change makers to meet each other in a low-stakes setting and talk about how to best advocate for increased access to Information Communications Technology (ICT) and the web, a basic human right. Now, at the M-Enabling Summit, I'm happy to report that we've had our largest event to-date and connected DC-area accessibility professionals with conference attendees. Someone said last week that the severity scale list I made for my informal accessibility reviews is really helpful, so because I like sharing things, here's how I do my informal reviews, including the severity scale I made: Make a table with the vitals: - Date - Stakeholders - JIRA ticket - Assistive tech used - Test types used - Glossary of terms Make a table with the headers: - Issue location / image (Tell em where it is and what it looks like) - Issue type (Content, Code, etc) - Issue detail (Tell em whats wrong) - Recommendation (Tell em how to fix it) - Severity tag (read below) Remember to add captions to your tables, always. Or if not possible technically, describe the table and it's content. And the severity scale I use is: Critical Issues that completely prevent users with disabilities from accessing or interacting with essential content or functionality. They constitute major barriers that need immediate attention. Serious Issues that significantly impair the user experience for people with disabilities, making it difficult or frustrating to complete tasks. They should be prioritised for resolution. Moderate Issues that create barriers or inconveniences for some users with disabilities, but workarounds may be possible. While not critical, addressing them will improve overall accessibility. Minor Issues that have minimal impact on accessibility but represent opportunities for enhancement. Addressing them can further refine the user experience for everyone. #AccessibilityMatters

I often get asked for examples of great A11Y designs. That is very hard to curate. While this article does not exactly answer that request, it does offer a before / after methodology of how design improvements can aid a11y efforts. Worth the read...and a bookmark. :)

You can’t just demand that all content moving forward must be accessible and then expect it to be so. 2. Be pragmatic in your approach. Start where you are. 3. Start with the design system. 4. Make the right choice the easy choice. 5. Listen to your customers, and use data to determine where to focus your efforts. 6. Focus on prevention, not just remediation. 7. Accessibility training is not a one-time thing. Focus on continuous education. 8. Remember that accessibility benefits everyone. 9. Build your business case with data. Keep track of sales deals and customer feedback. 10. Don’t worry about the naysayers. Start with those who are excited about accessibility. 11. Celebrate small wins, gain momentum, and watch the enthusiasm spread throughout the organization. 12. Accessibility is never done. #accessibility #a11y #accessibilityTipOfTheDay
