à propos
Gaia Impact is a French impact investment advisory firm specialized in renewable energy and emerging countries with a high focus on start-ups, SMEs, and infrastructure projects that have a strong social and environmental focal point. With the price of renewable energies getting highly competitive and the widespread development of new innovative and affordable solutions, we believe that renewable energies have to be backed with significant investments from the private sector. While climate change is a main issue, it can also be considered as an opportunity to develop a new clean economy while solving energy poverty and protecting our ecosystems.

?? Hélène Demaegdt was thrilled to participate in an exciting panel discussion at the occasion of the 5th Finance in Common summit (#FiCS2025) in Cape Town, South Africa. ? The side event “the role of Local Finance Institutions to unlock universal energy access”, organized by Agence Fran?aise de Développement and building on the political momentum of the Energy Summit held in Tanzania, resumed discussions about?how public development banks and private partners can play?a critical role in supporting the #Mission300 agenda. ? Local finance institutions provide limited financing for electricity access primarily due to high-perceived risks, a lack of technical expertise to assess such projects, and insufficient long-term financial instruments. ? Private funds such as the Gaia Energy Impact have the objective to finance early stage innovation and help companies become investment ready and attract more capital. However, de-risking tools provided by public institutions such as concessional funding, blended finance and guarantees are playing a major role in leveraging such private capital. ? ?? The FICS is a great occasion to foster collaboration between Gaia and such key partners with the aim to reach global access and maintain?impactful last mile operations with hundreds of local jobs! ?? 2025 will be “show off time” for renewable energies. ?? Changes are underway to decarbonize the economy in spite of persistent negative forces.?As 2024 was officially the first year the world exceeded the 1.5°C global warming limit, renewed but uncoordinated regulatory pressure is expected, driven by constituents’ demand in some key markets. ?? Encouraged by America’s fossil fuel agenda, markets will keep sending mixed signal regarding fossil fuel. But the overarching equation is that solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower are steadily overtaking fossil fuels in both cost and efficiency. In Africa, while C&I solar will keep growing, the emerging sector of solar generators will reach a breakthrough. ?? On the technology side, real-life AI use-cases will fast forward adoption of renewable energy, especially decentralized: - Predictive algorithms will help build Africa’s first virtual power plants; - Advanced battery managements systems, coupled with fast advances in battery technology and chemistry, will turbocharge electric vehicle adoption rate, creating pressure on incumbent to adapt to fast evolving customer demand. ?? On the financing side, massive public-sector initiatives such as #Mission300 will reshape the financing landscape of African energy by setting ambitious targets and timelines. Private sector participation is a key ingredient for the initiative' successfull implementation and we expect #AfricanSMEs, providing energy access solutions, to be the first beneficiaries of these new agenda coming up! Why we invested in Beacon Power Services (BPS)? ?? ? ?? There is a continuous demand for affordable and reliable power in #Africa, but the supply chain struggles to keep pace. Many utilities suffer from significant technical and commercial losses, with some regions experiencing losses up to 50%. Power outages have a substantial negative impact on GDP, with losses of up to 2% annually, affecting businesses, healthcare, and households. ? ?? BPS is addressing outdated infrastructure in #Nigeria - a country heavily reliant on diesel generators - by digitalizing utility distribution networks. The use of door-to-door surveys alongside an AI-enabled digital mapping platform creates "digital twins" of power grids, enhancing operational decision-making.? ? ?? Enhanced energy reliability reduces costs and dependency on generators, improving household and business conditions. The solution decreases reliance on fossil fuels and helps utilities integrate renewable energy sources into the grid. In the meantime, BPS's efforts lead to the creation of thousands of temporary jobs and hundreds of full-time positions, contributing significantly to local employment and skill development. ? In the following article, Guilhem Dupuy, partner at Gaia, shares more insights on why GEIF II invested in BPS!?https://lnkd.in/e7RdvszA ? #whyweinvested #griddigitalization #impactinvesting
