Grateful to Women in Data Science (WiDS) Geneva, Mariana Ungureanu Sevda Memet Oana Cosman for the opportunity to open their 2025 event tomorrow in Bucharest and talk about "AI and the future of the Space Industry". AI isn’t just transforming industries—it’s reshaping how we explore and operate in space. From commercial activities in low Earth orbit to autonomous systems and in-space manufacturing, AI is accelerating our ability to tackle both space-based and Earth-bound challenges. It powers satellite insights for agriculture, security, climate, and more—while revolutionizing how we navigate the harsh environment of space. As AI becomes more embedded in missions, our legal and ethical frameworks must evolve. Space law—originally built in the 1960s for a handful of astronauts—must now become more pragmatic and enforceable. With private spaceflight and autonomous systems on the rise, we need global structures that extend into space to address responsibility, liability, and oversight. AI also offers an opportunity to rethink global governance—helping harmonize national interests while fostering international collaboration. In microgravity manufacturing, for example, AI holds promise for breakthroughs in medicine, biomanufacturing, and sustainability. But unlocking this potential requires responsible innovation grounded in transparency, trust, and ethics. Ultimately, it’s about more than just public confidence. It’s about building responsible, unbiased, and trustworthy systems we can rely on—both in space and here on Earth. After all, we call ourselves Homo sapiens—the “wise human.” Wisdom means acting with foresight and care.
