Last year in Nepal and Bhutan gathered in Kathmandu where they had the privilege of learning about the incredible work being done by Sagarmatha Next and Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC). These organizations are dedicated to tackling plastic pollution by collecting waste from the Everest region for recycling. ?? They have a collection center in Lukla, where locals and tourists alike voluntarily carry plastic down from their treks, making a significant impact on the environment. Inspired by their efforts, our CEOs took on a challenge: To bring down 100 kgs of plastic in the first year and see what difference we could make. The results? 197.6 kgs of plastic! With 51 G Adventures groups participating in the Carry Me Back project, our teams went above and beyond, exceeding the original goal by almost double with 3 months to spare. Together, we’re making a difference and working towards a cleaner, plastic-free region.

Women play a vital role in shaping their communities, yet many still face barriers to achieving economic independence. Community tourism offers opportunities for women to lead, earn a living, gain financial autonomy, and confidently protect their cultural heritage. By supporting women in tourism, we at Planeterra are facilitating an environment that enables them to empower themselves and help their communities thrive. In Mexico, the women of the Asociación de Artesanas Zoológico Mágico are revitalizing traditional crafts while creating sustainable livelihoods, directly impacting 30 people. In India, Sheroes Hangout’s team of brave women is turning their challenging pasts into powerful stories of resilience, empowering others who have faced similar struggles, with 15 people directly benefitting. In Zimbabwe, the Lusumpuko Women’s Club is celebrating local culture and driving economic growth, employing 20 women. These are just a few examples of the positive, long-lasting impact of community tourism. After his fireside chat with Lyn Hughes on stage at the brilliant Adventure Travel Networking (ATN) conference last week, I grabbed 60 seconds with entrepreneur, leader and philanthropist Bruce Poon Tip OC, founder of G Adventures, to ask him: "What is the one thing you'd change in travel given the climate and nature emergencies?" This is what he said: "It would be that people understand the great privilege we have to travel. And with that privilege comes great responsibility. "As an industry and as a traveller, we should lean into the transformative ability that travel has, to not just transform your life as the traveller, but also transform local communities and people." ?? Just got back from a fantastic two-week trip with G Adventures where I managed to see all of the 'big five' (well - the leopard just about through binoculars), met some amazing people and discovered the friendly cultures, delicious food, and amazing scenery of Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
