There is plenty written about the topic of 'Loss Leading', in fact it is banned in nearly half the states. But what, if any, negative outcome is it having on the home services industry? ?? ?? ??
The Damage of Loss Leading Marketing and Sales Practices My name is Darren Dixon and I am the founder of fyxify and a 29 yr student of the home services industry, I’d like to discuss a controversial practice that has permeated the world of home service marketing and business strategy for far too long: loss leading. ? Loss leading, the strategy of marketing and selling a product/service below its production cost with the intention of recouping the loss through complementary sales, is not only a questionable business tactic; it's a moral issue. It preys on consumer vulnerability and distorts the very essence of fair competition. ? Let's consider the implications. When a company deliberately sells a product or service at a loss, it creates an illusion of affordability, drawing consumers in with promises of savings. But what's the real cost? Beyond the immediate purchase, loss leading sets a dangerous precedent. It devalues products, undermines quality, and erodes trust. ? Furthermore, loss leading disrupts the marketplace equilibrium. Small businesses, unable to sustain losses, are pushed to the brink of extinction. Meanwhile, corporate giants with deep pockets dominate. This stifles innovation and diversity. Not to mention the impact this practice is having on the labor market. Good and trustworthy technicians generally reject these tactics. ? But let's not forget the most crucial aspect: the consumer. Loss leading manipulates consumer behavior, encouraging impulsive purchases and fostering a culture of disposability. It's a short-sighted strategy that sacrifices long-term customer satisfaction for immediate gains. I have yet to hear one of my colleagues who use this strategy boast of their consumer retention rates… and let’s not confuse the false indicator of consumer satisfaction demonstrated by Google ratings only. ? Imagine a world where every purchase is made with transparency and confidence, where quality and value reign supreme. That's the world we should strive for—a world free of unethical marketing and predatory sales practices. ? So, my fellow home services pros, I urge you to demand transparency of yourself and your team, to reject the allure of providing false savings on services and all other greed motivated behavior, and to choose a business model that stands for integrity and fairness. Together, we can reclaim the true essence of what “Good Service” means—a symbiotic relationship between buyers and sellers built on trust, respect, and mutual benefit. Chew on this one for a while and let me know what you think.

"What if..." Consumers want protection based subscriptions for their homes to remove the "what if" stress. Protection plans help consumers manage the service and repairs of their major items like their HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. There isn't a more consumer focussed product in this category than a Protection Plan. The average home ?? has less than one week's pay in the bank. The anxiety homeowners face about making the ends meet is higher than it has been in decades. "what if" something unplanned happens? Protection Plans remove the worry of the "what if" our HVAC breaks and we cannot afford to repair it. Protection Plans remove the worry of the "what if" our water heater breaks or our drains clog. Protection Plans remove the worry of the "what if" our electrical panel fails or our receptacles stop working. Having a Protection Plan is like having an insurance policy that handles the big stuff for you, and with ease and convenience. If you are interested to offer Protection Plans to your customers, send me a note and I will show you how easy it is to get started.
