Our Founding MD, Adrien Cohen, recently took the stage at Forward Global in Los Angeles to discuss SCI Ventures’ venture philanthropy model. Many conditions still lack treatments because typical investors don’t have the specialized knowledge to back early-stage breakthroughs and nudge them to the clinic. That’s where funds like SCI Ventures excel: we bring deep expertise in a specific condition, helping de-risk innovation and draw private capital. This approach has already proven successful in areas like Cystic Fibrosis and Type 1 Diabetes - now, it’s time to apply it to paralysis—and deliver the next generation of treatments! At the Forward Global Summit last week I was able to connect with so many passionate philanthropists and industry leaders on the importance of philanthropy stepping up in these critical times. I was honoured to host a member's discussion on "funding the unfunded" - how we optimally support underfunded causes. Here's what we learned together. 1. Talk to constituents directly about their needs rather than making assumptions. Listen actively and be open to being challenged on your theory of change. 2. Consider adding on a special additional grant to underfunded causes to empower them to spend on marketing/soliciting new donations - perhaps through engaging a consulting firm or creating new media/documentary storytelling. 3. Purposely diversify funding. Fund the other side of the problem. 4. Acknowledge the fact that underfunded areas are often harder to obtain quick gains. Your funding portfolio should allow for longer term, uncertain "wins". 4. Ask professionals like doctors or local leaders what areas they would fund if they had the choice - what is the need they see? 5. Ask nonprofits who else is operating in the ecosystem that is lacking attention. It was so energizing to be around such an incredible group of peers!

Then, you can do magical things,” he added. “I think everyone is a philanthropist. In the end, what we're effectively trying to do is make a change in the world to allow safe passage for our species,” he concluded. ?? #PHIL50: Networks of ultra-wealthy philanthropists like Forward Global, Donors of Color Network, and Women Moving Millions say they’re increasingly connecting with younger donors who tend to want to work more collaboratively than earlier generations of funders. The average age of a donor on this year’s Philanthropy 50 ranking is 73.5. But many donors in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are giving big today and are poised to continue shaping philanthropy in the decades to come.
