Naming a new business? Here are my criteria to protect your business from legal and growth risk: P.S. Failing one might be okay but you can't afford to fail two! —————— 1?? Clever But Clear Many of the best business names have a clear relationship to the product, service, or category. Portmanteaus (combining two words) work well for this one. E.g., AirBnb, Salesforce, Facebook, Costco, Netflix, Tesla ——— 2?? Unique But Not Obscure Will pass if it’s unique in the product/service category, but bonus points if just generally unique… while still being able to say and spell it. Misspellings sometimes work well here. E.g., Google, Uber, Starbucks, Apple, Oreo, Nike, Lyft, Flickr — 2????? Doesn’t ‘Hit’ in the WIPO Global Brands Database Don’t choose a name that’s currently or even previously trademarked. — 2????? Company Name is Available in Your Business Jurisdiction Check the business name registry of your local jurisdiction to make sure your planned company name isn’t in there already. ——— 3?? Full Domain Suite Available You must get the .com, any regional extensions, related extensions and even adjacent (similar or misspelled) domains. If you plan to do business in the US or globally, the .com is non-negotiable IMO. Lock all of them down so no one steals your traffic, holds your brand hostage or uses a similar domain for phishing! E.g., I was able to find several adjacent domains or newer domain extensions available for several major banks, which would be easy for a nefarious party to use in bank phishing attacks. ——— 4?? Supports the Likely/Intended Brand Personality Match your company name to the style and tone of your whole business and/or target audience. If your brand is going to be serious, respected, and knowledgeable, don’t choose a silly, flippant, or ridiculous name. E.g., You’re starting a high-end healthy and organic snack foods brand and plan to compete against KIND Bars. Probably best to pass on “Snaxxy” even if it meets the other naming criteria! —————— Are you thinking of starting your own company? Naming it can be hard, but we at Futurpruf Marketing help founders find a future-proofed name they love. Consider our #StartupMarketingPackage too. #branding #brandname #startup #founder

  • It can be frustrating when your external marketing agency or freelancer creates you an asset — brochure, pitch deck, illustration or website — and then you're handcuffed to keep using them when inevitably the asset became outdated or you want to leverage the piece for something else. That’s why we do things differently. We want to be your strategic partner, delivering outrageous value in every interaction. So, we: ??Ask you what marketing and design tools you're already using ??Make an effort to use the same tools when doing our work for you ??Provide editable files along with the final asset whenever possible For example, we delivered a product brochure in Figma this week because our client is familiar with that platform. Other clients love Canva (we do too!) so we design in Canva so that they can easily replicate our work for other products, use cases, etc. And many of our website projects for smaller businesses make use of easy-to-learn page builder tools like Divi so that our clients gain full control of their website when we’ve built it. Of course we also use exclusive tools many clients don’t have the budget for, but generally we work to build you a F1 Ferrari and then hand you the keys ????? ----------------------------------- Contact us today to design something you use over and over again: hello@ futurpruf. com
