Last week, I gave a talk in D.C. titled "Cold War Two Economics—Navigating the New Era of Uncertainty." The big idea? Emerging Cold War Two? dynamics hold major economic, financial, and supply chain implications for the global landscape and our interconnected world. My unclassified two-hour invite-only talk (with Q&A) was hosted by the National Intelligence University Center for Futures Intelligence at the?NIU Intelligence, Research, Education, and Solutions (iRES) Laboratory. Attendees included policymakers, intelligence professionals, industry leaders, and academics. This talk was a preview of my forthcoming book with the same title. Last week, I spoke at SOF Week, a USSOCOM event with over 22,000 attendees. My remarks focused on operating in the information environment of #ColdWarTwo. In an official capacity, I was representing the Joint Special Operations University as a Non-Resident Fellow. In my remarks, I shared my personal thoughts and original research from Prestige Economics and The Futurist Institute. The highlights of my remarks? - Our Cold War adversaries are back together again. - Projecting effective deterrence is a top priority. - We need to demonstrate unwavering reliability to our allies. ?? U.S. #Inflation News - Consumer Inflation in January 2024 ?? The journey towards inflation normalization is far from over. Despite hopes for a significant easing, the numbers tell a different story, painting a picture of a stubbornly high inflationary environment. And that means interest rate cuts will have to wait. ?? Key Highlights - Core CPI remains unchanged and elevated at +3.9% year-on-year, once again surpassing Total CPI and underscoring persistent inflationary pressures. It's almost double the Federal Reserve's 2% target! - Total CPI decelerated slightly to +3.1% from 3.4%, a modest improvement yet also well above the Fed's 2% target. - On a monthly basis, Total CPI increased by +0.3% and Core CPI by +0.4%, signaling ongoing upward pressures. ?? Sector-Specific Insights - Food prices continued to rise, up +0.4% monthly and +2.6% year-on-year. - Energy prices offered a glimmer of hope, falling -0.9% monthly, though down -4.6% year-on-year. - The shelter component of CPI, a key inflation driver, rose by +0.6% this month, marking a +6.0% increase year-on-year. ?? Fed Implications and #InterestRates While the hope for a rapid easing of inflation remains, reality dictates a more measured expectation. The latest CPI report casts a shadow over the anticipated timeline for Federal Reserve rate cuts. With Core CPI nearly double the Fed's target, the prospect of maintaining higher interest rates for longer looms large. ?? Looking Ahead - It's about #Jobs and the #Economy! Because of elevated inflation, strong job growth, and overall economic resilience, the Fed's path to rate reductions appears more cautious, likely pushing any potential cuts to around the midyear or later. ?? A discussion of the economic outlook for the U.S. economy, the international economy, Washington State, and the Seattle region, including King and Snohomish counties.
