For #NativeHawaiians, all life began in the deep sea. This connection is clearly described in the kumulipo, or Hawaiian creation chant. And that ancestral, Indigenous connection is the foundation of Pacific people?s advocating against deep sea mining. Uncle Sol shared this connection for us for this interview, to local communities in Hawai?i, and to decision makers at the International Seabed Authority (ISA). By sharing Pacific people?s relationship to the deep sea, he advocates for cultural consideration and a framework of Indigenous advisory as the ISA navigates the emerging #deepseamining industry.
