???Oysters are a keystone species in Charleston, meaning without oysters, this ecosystem would not be able to sustain everything that everyone loves. Oyster reefs provide: -Water filtration ?? -Habitat creation ?? -Shoreline stabilization ??? South Carolina Department of Natural Resources SCORE Program is a community-based habitat restoration and monitoring program that helps to educate the public about the importance of oysters as well as build and restore habitat using oyster reefs. ?? ???Futureswell has joined the National Ocean Protection Coalition to work together in creating and supporting marine protected areas in an equitable, strategic, and collective way. Aligned with the community-driven values of FutureSwell, The National Ocean Protection Coalition (NOPC)?s mission is to convene people and organizations to strategically activate our collective power to enhance equitable and effective U.S. marine protected areas. Beyond establishing new protections, this also means strengthening existing MPAs, centering ocean justice, and uplifting community-driven strategies within MPAs. With only 5 years left to safeguard 30% of the global ocean, we are seeking collaborative partnerships and aligned like this one to protect #PlanetOcean. ??

???OCEAN WIN: Papahāhanaumokuākea is officially a #NationaMarineSanctuary!! ??Papahāhanaumokuākea, the northwestern Hawaiian islands, joins as the 18th and LARGEST national marine sanctuary in the national system, as well as the largest MPA in the Northern Hemisphere ?? ?? This win contributes to 30x30, a global goal to safeguard 30% of the ocean in the next five years, and marks additional protections for the cultural heritage and biodiversity known to the area. ?Can it be undone with Tr*mp? Papahāhanaumokuākea was established as a monument under George Bush and expanded under Obama, so the protections for this area have been historically bipartisan. The sanctuary would need to be undone with 60% vote of Congress. ???Nuance: On January 16th, the final rule for sanctuary designation was filed by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and the sanctuary designation will take effect 45 days after continuous Congress, estimated March 2025. The sanctuary designation overlays existing monument designation. #hugeandhopefuloceannews

At #reefutures2024, Nicole Crane of One People One Reef presented on their community-led work in Micronesia to heal reefs in the outer island of Yap, centered on traditional ocean knowledge. She emphasizes the need for young people to continue to build bridges across generations, which we can all play a role in. #wavesofchange
