What does a bag of potato chips have to do with the #ClimateCrisis? More than you think. From synthetic fertilizers to plastic packaging, fossil fuels are deeply embedded in industrial food production. A Civil Eats op-ed by our Executive Director Anna Lappé exposes how oil and gas giants are using #FoodSystems to entrench their control even as the world pushes for decarbonization. Consider this: At least 15% of global fossil fuel consumption comes from the food sector, with production, processing, transport, packaging and retail driving emissions. Yet, food-related fossil fuel use is often hidden in national emissions reporting. We break down these connections—and what to do about them—in six episodes of the #FueltoFork podcast. Tune in to learn how we can build food systems free from fossil fuel dependence. ??? Listen to Fuel to Fork, co-produced with IPES-Food & TABLE: bit.ly/fueltofork ?? Fossil fuels are the hidden ingredient in our food systems—accounting for at least 15% of global fossil fuel use. ??? From fertilizers to packaging, they’re embedded in every stage of the food supply chain. To tackle the climate crisis, food systems must be part of the solution. A big thank you to Jennifer Clapp for shining a light on this critical issue with our Power Shift report, which calls for food systems tranformation to play a central role in fossil fuel phase-out strategies. ?? ??? The connection between food, health, and climate has never been more urgent. As #NutritionForGrowth kicks off this week in Paris, it's time to recognize that transforming food systems isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about human well-being. Industrialized food systems and unhealthy diets are major drivers of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and rising global disease rates. But solutions exist. Around the world, inspiring initiatives are proving that better food systems can nourish people while protecting the planet. Our research highlights 10 groundbreaking health-focused food initiatives that are making a difference. ?? Fossil fuel subsidies keep synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics artificially cheap, making industrial agriculture and ultra-processed foods the norm. But we’re paying the price—through the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and diet-related diseases. In this Civil Eats op-ed, our ED Anna Lappé uncovers how the fossil fuel industry is deepening its grip on #FoodSystem. By one estimate, 74% of petrochemicals already go into agriculture—and that number is rising. Instead of propping up Big Oil, we need investment in regenerative agriculture, agroecology, and local food systems that break free from fossil fuel dependence. ?? ?? On the road towards Nutrition4Growth in Paris ?? ?? As the Decade of Action on #Nutrition approaches its conclusion, we must ask: where do we stand? What have we achieved? The upcoming Nutrition for Growth (N4G) summit, taking place in Paris (26-28 March) presents an opportunity to highlight the impact of current food systems on our health and to advocate for the urgency of a sustainable transition. In this opinion article, Patrizia Fracassi (Nutrition Division, FAO) and Rachel Bezner Kerr (Cornell University) present how #agroecology can nourish both people and the planet! ?? I am pleased to share our recent article in The Tribune, India, which emphasises the role of natural and regenerative farming in securing India's food, nutritional, and ecological security. Dr Rajiv Kumar at Pahlé India Foundation (PIF) and I highlight that these sustainable farming systems—natural, organic, and regenerative farming—originated in India and have demonstrated tremendous potential globally. As much of India's agricultural land is currently under intensive agricultural practices, there is a need to re-examine the role of #natural, #regenerative farming?across all agro-climatic zones. Following this, an appropriately diversified approach can be adopted based on geography, social, and ecological conditions in each agro-climatic zone. This will help achieve a relatively rapid uptake of natural or regenerative farming practices in India. This will enable Indian agriculture to diversify and adopt sustainable and #equitable farming systems.? The National Food Security Act (NFSA) in India states that the right to food must be implemented to guarantee food to the needy people at affordable prices. Thus, food security is of great concern to India. With its population, currently at 143 crore, which is likely to expand to 160 crore by the 2060s, food security will remain the one of the top policy agendas. There is a need to re-examine the role of natural farming across agro-climatic zones, say #NITIAayog ex-Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar and Federation University Australia prof Harpinder Sandhu @001harpinder in @thetribunechd #TheTribuneOpinion Read: https://lnkd.in/gavBuxJT

“Acknowledging the different roles livestock have is essential for tailoring interventions,” says Mario Herrero, professor at Cornell University and Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability Scholar. A 20-member research team, led by Clare Kazanski, recently published the study “Context is Key to Understand and Improve Livestock Production Systems” in Global Food Security journal. This peer-reviewed study, funded by Macdoch Foundation, analyses 10 expert-led case studies of ruminant livestock production systems around the world, yielding insights into how local and global economic, environmental, and cultural factors influence livestock management. The research highlights that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, and that context-specific interventions can reveal the benefits and trade-offs to maximise benefits for people, nature and climate. ???? Let’s talk about #FoodSystems and their impact on our oceans. What happens on land doesn’t stay there—industrial agriculture runoff, plastic pollution, and overfishing all disrupt marine ecosystems. Small-scale fishers, who provide food security and protect biodiversity, are often sidelined while corporate interests drive industrial aquaculture. The solution? Supporting fisher-led movements for food sovereignty and marine protection. ?? This Alliance magazine op-ed highlights why philanthropy must shift from top-down approaches to directly investing in those safeguarding our waters. ??
