The government’s earmarking of ￡400 million within the UK Ministry of Defence innovation, spending 10% of the MoD’s equipment budget on tech such as drones and AI alongside the headline announcement of allocating an extra ￡2.2 billion on security is to be encouraged. The Ditchley Foundation brings together global experts to discuss key issues at the intersection of policy, technology and Anglo American relations. Recently they hosted a timely conversation on "AI and National Security,"?surrounded by experts from government, national security, science, and investment. It was a ‘once-in-a-generation’ moment?to engage in such dialogue. There were many apocalyptic threats discussed from the advancement of AI, but our Executive Chairman Douglas Hansen-Luke was pleased to say that the meeting ended on a note of optimism as the group also identified the many positives that AI can bring. Douglas's one contribution? To request that we focus on ‘AI for peace’. Nottingham-based HALO X-ray Technologies Ltd, backed by BVCA-member Future Planet Capital, is a pioneer in next-generation automatic X-ray diffraction screening technology and systems, to improve screening in aviation, customs, and borders applications. ? ?? Last month, the BVCA was able to facilitate a visit to HALO by the local MP and Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood. She met with company CEO Simon Godber and other members of the team, as they demonstrated the company’s innovative X-ray screening technology. ? ?? Lilian heard about HALO’s ambitions to expand supply of this much-needed innovative screening capability to the international aviation security market. The discussion also focused on the huge investment potential and ambitions in the East Midlands - a region which benefits from a skilled workforce, connection to global markets and universities delivering research and innovation. ? ?? Following the visit, Lilian said: “I was delighted to meet with Halo’s team, including CEO Simon Godber, and hear about the company’s pioneering automatic solutions, particularly for aviation and border security. Venture capital firms vary widely in their approach to technology adoption. Some still rely on Microsoft Excel and WhatsApp, while others are rapidly integrating advanced tools to build a truly modern tech stack. ? The concept of a “Data-Driven VC” isn’t a binary split - it exists on a spectrum. Revamping legacy systems often falls to new hires, giving them a unique opportunity to make an early impact in an industry known for its long feedback loops. But this raises an important question: Are senior GPs underestimating the power of an optimised tech stack? Meanwhile, U.S. software companies like Affinity are expanding beyond their home market, hosting more London-based events to engage European VCs as these ecosystems grow. Does this signal that European industries have now scaled enough to support homegrown software startups serving local VCs? Could some of these startups grow successfully within Europe alone before making the leap to the U.S.?
