I recently joined the Future of Agriculture podcast with Tim Hammerich to discuss my role and provide some insight into how our profession can influence the future of #agribusiness and agriculture. While other nations like China increase their investment, the United States must reaffirm its priorities for agricultural innovation to maintain its competitive edge. - The #BullwhipEffect in #SupplyChains Has MASSIVE IMPLICATIONS for Agribusiness: Small changes in consumer demand can cause major disruptions throughout the supply chain, as we saw with products like chicken wings and eggs during COVID. These shifts emphasize the need for adaptive and flexible supply chain management strategies. - Economics is a #Behavioral and Social Science: From #ChoiceOverload for grocery consumers to #SocialPressure influencing farmers' decisions, biases affect everyone across the supply chain. #AgriculturalEconomics departments worldwide are working to understand these biases to help their stakeholders—from producers to marketers—make better strategic decisions. There has been quite a bit of conversation about loss of soil and organic matter on farms and how that will impact yields in the future. This has been difficult to address from an industrial perspective. Regenerative Ag is the broad category for how this issue is being addressed, but not many products have come out of the current leaders in the industry. Can industry identify and implement simple and cost-effective solutions that growers can integrate into their current practices that will reduce soil and organic matter loss?? ?? Industry is now beginning to address this. Syngenta has hired a team reporting to the highest levels of the organization.?Matthew Wallenstein?is the chief soil scientist at Syngenta and former Professor of Soil Science at Colorado State University. I enjoyed this weeks podcast from Future of Agriculture with Paul Mikesell Lots of good learnings & validations for us at 4AG Robotics from their story, but the best one was when Paul said "John Deere said it was impossible, and that [Carbon Robotics] was never going to work. So I felt like, well, great, I have this thing working that everybody thinks is impossible. Let's go." This is what makes Agtech so much fun. It's a massive challenge, takes far more time & money than you expect, but that moment where people say what you're doing is impossible while it's physically working in the real world is just the best. We had a similar moment this week on a panel for #automation & #robots in the #mushroom industry. I was on the panel and one of the other panelists said that robots cannot pick 100% of a flush (they were advocating for having robots work next to people), while our robots were actively picking 100% of the flush on a farm for the 3rd month in a row. There's something so magical about hearing someone say what you're doing can't be done, while it's literally doing it.
