    Just had this conversation with a hiring leader/executive. Two strong candidates: one who has a better resume, the other who is a better communicator. So....Resume vs. Communication: Who Would You Hire? Hiring decisions aren’t always straightforward. Imagine you were in this scenario: ?? Candidate A – An impressive resume, packed with relevant experience, skills, and achievements. ?? Candidate B – A strong communicator who may have less experience but can clearly articulate ideas, collaborate effectively, and adapt quickly. Who gets the job? It’s tempting to lean on the resume—after all, experience matters. But in today’s workplace, communication is often the game-changer. A candidate who can listen, influence, and connect with teams can sometimes outperform the one with the "perfect" qualifications on paper. Of course, the best-case scenario is both! But if you had to choose, which would you prioritize: the stronger resume or the stronger communicator? And why? ??     Perception: Retained Search costs more than Contingent Search. Reality? Well, let’s do the math. Let’s start with Contingent Search. Payment upfront: Nothing. But did you calculate the cost of… ??The TIME it takes to sift through a high volume of related, but not curated, resumes. ??The $$ spent on each hour it takes to conduct interviews with your interview team based on those resumes. ??Potentially having to start from scratch with another recruiter when you have to go back to the drawing board…Or communicating with multiple contingent search firms simultaneously. (You should know that contingent search firms have around a 25% success fill rate, and may drop your search if they can’t fill it quickly to avoid working for free.)     Getting a true sense of your candidates means you have to... ... ask better questions. It takes more than Googling a list of interview questions and calling it good. You have to know what types of questions to ask…and when. Here’s a quick rundown of a few different types of techniques you might use: ?? Behavioral Interviewing: Focuses on past experiences as the best predictor of future behavior. You might use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Great for assessing soft skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and conflict resolution. ??Competency-Based Interviewing: Evaluates specific skills and competencies required for the role. You might ask candidates to demonstrate how they've handled key job tasks in the past. Helps assess both hard and soft skills and cultural fit. ??Technical Interviewing: Technically, ALL roles require technical interview questions. These questions focus on a candidate's experience and are directly related to the position. They’re probably around skills needed to meet short-term goals and will make a quick impact. You might ask candidates to solve job-relevant problems or answer technical questions. Assesses problem-solving skills and technical proficiency. ??Hiring leaders??
