FOCUSED ULTRASOUND INVESTIGATOR PROFILE: Lynn Dengel, MD, is a surgical oncologist at UVA Health who is currently leading a clinical trial assessing the combination of focused ultrasound and immunotherapy for the treatment of melanoma. She also conducts focused ultrasound research for treating breast cancer. Dr. Dengel recently began serving as a senior advisor for the Foundation, where she helps guide strategy for advancing focused ultrasound in the field of cancer immunotherapy. The groundbreaking HIFI Study published by European Urology found that mid-term salvage treatment-free outcomes are comparable, with a better safety profile favoring HIFU over radical prostatectomy. Focal One Robotic HIFU provided noninferior cancer control for patients in the study compared to surgery. The median reduction in IIEF-5 score at 12 months was significantly less after HIFU than after RP. Focused Ultrasound for OCD: International patients with treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can now access focused ultrasound trials at Sunnybrook in Toronto. “Historically, research studies and trials at Sunnybrook were only open to Canadian citizens, so being able to open our site to a global population is an exciting milestone,” said Nir Lipsman, MD, PhD, who leads the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation at Sunnybrook. “It not only provides many patients for whom other therapies haven’t worked access to focused ultrasound treatment, but it also helps [us] gain knowledge and experience as we investigate focused ultrasound for psychiatric conditions.” Recently published results from a clinical trial led by Lipsman indicated that focused ultrasound capsulotomy was safe and effective in patients with OCD one year after treatment.
