We recently went to Miami to shoot testimonials for ZS. Over the few days, we filmed at two locations. One location was a grand hallway lined with windows that provided tons of natural light. However, over the course of a 10-hour day, the light obviously changed as the sun rose and set. As a Director of Photography, the rule is to never rely on natural light for this very reason— without the necessary tools, it's uncontrollable and introduces too many variables. However, since it was a travel shoot, we didn't have access to unlimited tools. Moreover, we weren't able to scout the location in full ahead of time, so we couldn't have known this hallway would be our filming location to begin with, making it impossible to plan accordingly. All that to say, we chose the hallway knowing full well that the natural light would change throughout the day, but we loved the frame enough to deal with this as it happened. Attached are three frames: the first being bright and sunny, the second being contrasty, and the third being at sunset, where we relied more on the warm hue of the hallway light fixtures and the cool colors from the windows. Yes, it's better practice not to rely on natural light without full control, but we adjusted our interview lighting setup, white balance, camera position (slightly), and ND to expose the background to our liking—and we think it turned out great! Sure, in a perfect world, we'd have rolls of ND or be able to "radio the truck," which became the constant joke throughout the day as we watched the sun move. When YARD 1 contacted us to film a concrete pour, it wasn’t immediately clear that we’d be watching history in the making. A 130,000 sqft slab needed to be continuously poured, totaling roughly 9,300 cubic yards of concrete. There were 5 pumps, conveyors, over 900 concrete deliveries by Ozinga, and massive crews from Scurto Cement Construction Ltd - all in all, a combined team of over 300 personnel working continuously from midnight to mid-afternoon. Although we certainly felt the effects of staying awake the following day, it was a great project and an incredible feat for all involved.
