NEW: As cryptocurrencies surge in the U.S., will Canadian crypto-philanthropy see an uptick as well? In Vancouver, Last Door Recovery Centre is a treatment and rehabilitation space for those struggling with substance use. Since 2014, they have been accepting Bitcoin donations, and estimate that they've processed around $1 million in crypto-donations since. Donation activity is, however, highly dependent on the state of cryptocurrencies overall: "we've observed that Bitcoin donations tend to correlate with overall cryptocurrency market trends," said the organisation's director of fund development and projects. "During periods of high crypto prices and media attention, we typically see an uptick in donations." Last Door is a unique case in an ever-changing crypto-giving space: most charities will likely go through donation management platforms and intermediaries, whose own systems are dependent on crypto-exchange platforms and regulatory changes. And then there is also a wildly different attitude towards cryptocurrencies between the U.S. and Canada: several large charities and non-profits in the U.S. have crypto donations enabled, while in Canada, there is understandably a bit more hesitation. Nonetheless, we know this is something that will continue to fluctuate and develop. Huge thank you to CanadaHelps, The Giving Block, Fundraise Up, Impact Public Affairs Corp. (Canada), Jason Shim, World Vision Canada, Last Door Recovery Centre and North York Harvest Food Bank -- and the Canadian Revenue Agency -- for a snapshot on where we're at now. https://lnkd.in/eyv-9SGC #cryptocurrencies #philanthropy #tech4good
