Always thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with A.J. Wasserstein in his ongoing effort to provide meaningful insights into the world of entrepreneurship through acquisition. In conjunction with Brian Wolfe and Sandy Paige, we set out to create a framework for understanding the roles that investors do, and don't, play in the search journey. A.J. has done a wonderful job of providing an objective lens on this critical pillar of the search framework. I was the beneficiary of incredible investor support during my 20 years as a search operator, and hope that we can continue that tradition at Anacapa Partners, recognizing that our ultimate role is one of active partnership to entrepreneurs who are betting on themselves. https://lnkd.in/gWqSheSH

Thrilled to share this paper I co-wrote with Yale School of Management Professor A.J. Wasserstein, and Jeff Stevens, who founded Anacapa Partners, a leading search fund investor, with key insights provided by Sandy Paige, who built and sold Explora Biolabs to Charles River Laboratories, regarding “What Exactly Search Fund Investors Do — and Don’t Do — for Entrepreneurs.” As we note, we are shameless fans of investors and applaud everything they do for entrepreneurs. But, investor capital is expensive, and so it’s fair for entrepreneurs to ask, “What exactly am I getting?” (The short answer is: plenty, but not everything.) A link to the paper is in the comments below

So… What’s going on with the acquisition rate? Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about declining acquisition rates in search, so when Steve Divitkos’s In The Trenches hosted Jim Edmunds, Badge Stone, and Kent Weaver (a truly all-star cast of investors!) to break it all down, our team had to listen. They tackled why fewer searchers are closing deals and whether that trend is here to stay. Their take? It’s not just one thing. Yes, more searchers are in the market. Yes, private equity firms are creeping into smaller deals. And yes, seller expectations have changed. But the real issue isn’t just competition — it’s too many people looking for the same kinds of deals in the same ways. They point to searcher fatigue — not the exhaustion a searcher feels, but the weariness brokers and sellers feel from constantly hearing from searchers. When your inbox is flooded with identical copy-paste emails, it’s easy to tune them out. The good news? The searchers who are getting creative — leaning on calls, in-person meetings, and building real connections — are still finding great deals. Despite all this, they’re still incredibly bullish on search (and, unsurprisingly, as is NGP). The market is shifting, but the fundamentals of search success haven’t changed: independent thinking, creative outreach, and some old-fashioned perseverance. This past weekend, Venture for Canada welcomed the 29 participants of VFC’s inaugural Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) Academy. These individuals, selected from a pool of approximately 200 applicants, traveled from across Canada to join the program. Sixty percent are from Ontario, while the rest flew in from coast to coast—reflecting the growing national interest in ETA. With tens of thousands of small businesses set to change hands in the coming years, ETA offers a huge opportunity—but too few Canadians know how to navigate the process. This program changes that. Over five weeks, ETA Academy equips participants with the knowledge, networks, and confidence to buy and scale a business. Excited to welcome the first ETA Academy cohort, including Ehi Agbonlahor, Lily A., Khatiza Bi Bi (MCP, RP), Aaron Biblow, Ray Cronin, Junaid Grewal, Niels Hurst, Crystal Kyabaggu, CPA, Josh MacKinnon, Cormac McGee, Andrew Nguyen, Vincent Panepinto, Will Portman, hossein raeisi, Viventhraa Rao, Natali Ristevski, and Cherry Yang. A big shout out to the Venture for Canada team and Touhami Abi for all of their work turning this program from an idea into reality! A big thanks to all of the speakers involved in the weekend, including Mario Nigro, Zack Belzberg, Eric Silber, Alexandra Bashir, Matt Stone, Simon Leith, Laxmi Yadav, Gregor Vahramian, and Steve Ballantyne. Thrilled to pen this op-ed for Crain's Chicago Business today about the need to continue to elevate Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) in our conversations about entrepreneurship and champion the next generation of acquisition entrepreneurs and business leaders in Chicago. I teach ETA at Washington University in St. Louis - Olin Business School and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and together with my partners at Funded Ventures, buy and build small businesses. We believe that ETA presents a unique opportunity to create value and support our local communities. I'm also proud to be a board member at Intersect Illinois and help grow investment in Illinois. https://lnkd.in/g6NSJzJd
