New research suggests the Great Lakes are much older than we once thought—challenging long-held assumptions about their formation and history. This discovery is a reminder that we still have so much to learn about our Great Lakes and the forces that have shaped them. Ongoing research is vital not just for uncovering the past, but for understanding how we can best protect these waters for the future. We support the science that helps us care for and sustain this incredible resource.

A new exhibit at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc is bringing Wisconsin’s rich Lake Michigan commercial fishing history to life! From the days of thriving fisheries to the challenges posed by invasive species and changing waters, this exhibit tells the story of the people, traditions, and ecosystems that have shaped our Great Lake. It’s a powerful reminder of how deeply connected our communities are to Lake Michigan—and why protecting its future matters.

A new documentary sheds light on the devastating impact of quagga mussels in the Great Lakes. These invasive filter feeders have reshaped entire ecosystems, disrupting food webs, fueling algal blooms, and threatening native species. Their story is one of unintended consequences—and a reminder of why protecting our waters from future invasions is so critical. We’re following this issue closely and remain committed to solutions that restore balance to our Great Lake.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced that, starting March 10, icebreaking operations commenced in the southern Bay of Green Bay to prepare for the 2025 Great Lakes shipping season. The USCGC Mackinaw began these operations, which include all navigable waters in and around the ports of Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Marinette, Menominee, and Escanaba. While these efforts are essential for ensuring safe and efficient commercial navigation, they can pose significant hazards for recreational users on the ice. The Coast Guard advises all ice users to plan their activities carefully, stay informed about the latest icebreaking schedules, and exercise extreme caution during this period. Your safety is paramount; please stay updated and prioritize caution during this transition to the shipping season.

Exciting progress is underway on Milwaukee's lakefront! The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), in collaboration with local and federal partners, has initiated construction of the Dredged Material Management Facility (DMMF) on Jones Island. This 42-acre facility is designed to safely contain approximately 1.9 million cubic yards of sediment dredged from the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers, addressing historical contamination in the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern. By implementing this environmentally sound solution, the project aims to protect public health, enhance water quality, and improve fish and wildlife habitats. Upon completion, the DMMF will not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also offer potential future public space along Lake Michigan's shoreline.
