Lonnie George Johnson is an American inventor, aerospace engineer, and entrepreneur, best known for inventing the bestselling Super Soaker water gun in 1982. He was formerly employed at the U.S. Air Force and NASA, where he worked as an aerospace engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he contributed to missions such as Galileo (to Jupiter) and Cassini (to Saturn). He also worked on the development of nuclear power sources for space exploration. Beyond the Super Soaker, Johnson holds over 100 patents and has worked on advanced energy technologies, including lithium battery improvements and thermoelectric energy conversion. His company, Johnson Research & Development, continues to focus on innovative energy and environmental solutions.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was an African American inventor who lived from 1922 to 1999. She is best known for inventing the first home security system, which consisted of a series of peepholes, a camera, and a two-way communication system that allowed homeowners to monitor visitors at their front door. Brown was motivated to invent the security system after experiencing frequent break-ins in her neighborhood and feeling unsafe in her home. Her invention laid the foundation for modern home security systems and shaped how we think about personal safety.

Depicted in the 2016 movie Hidden Figures, Katherine Johnson was a mathematician who calculated flight paths for early NASA spaceflights, including the trajectory for Alan Shephard's 1961 flight.?Johnson was a "human computer" who worked for NASA from 1953 to 1986.?She earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist." In 2015, President?Barack Obama?awarded Johnson the?Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Garrett Morgan created early versions of the traffic light and gas mask. He began his career as a sewing-machine mechanic before patenting an improved sewing machine design and a hair-straightening product, among other inventions. His breathing device, known as a safety hood, later provided the blueprint for World War I gas masks. In 1923, Morgan invented a safer traffic light. The notable Black inventor, who lived much of his life in Ohio, died in July 1963 at age 86.
