Professor George Rust appeared on WCTV to discuss recent measles outbreaks, including one in West Texas, which at the time had reported 159 cases, 20 hospitalizations, and one death. Experienced in advising about measles outbreaks, Rust highlighted the importance of maintaining a 95% vaccination rate to prevent widespread transmission. However, declining vaccination rates are increasing the risk of further outbreaks of the highly contagious disease. The CDC defines an outbreak as three or more related cases. He also addressed a recent measles case at a Miami-Dade high school, warning that if children in the affected classroom are not vaccinated, up to 90% could be at risk of contracting the virus. Full vaccination – ?two doses at least 28 days or 3 months apart, depending on whether it’s an MMR or MMRV – offers 97% lifelong protection, Rust emphasized.

In 2025, our college became the first academic unit at Florida State University to earn the prestigious Strength through Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR) Certification ??, a key initiative of the FSU Resilience Institute for Strength and Empowerment (RISE). This achievement reflects our continued commitment to fostering resilience and trauma awareness in our community, and we’re proud to lead by example. The STAR Certification arose from Provost Jim Clark’s vision for a trauma-aware university through empowering organizations to better support individuals who have experienced trauma. ?? Earlier this month, Provost Clark and Dean David Springer joined us in celebrating the launch of RISE. ?? When cuts are made to academic research, the repercussions are felt across the country. From 1996 to 2020, over 6.5 million jobs were supported, more than 200 drugs and vaccines were developed, and $1.9 trillion in gross industrial output was generated. Reducing investment in this critical area affects people, patients, and economic growth. #Research #Innovation #Biotechnology Download the infographic and share: https://lnkd.in/eAsg6JvW
