FSU Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences

Florida State University alumna Anne Spencer Daves, who spent 30 years as a fourth-grade educator in Central Florida, has made a transformational gift to the university’s College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences that will impact the lives of future educators at FSU while honoring the college’s 70,000 alumni teachers. The university honored Daves at the Heritage Museum in Dodd Hall, recognizing her lifelong generosity and support of education at FSU. During the event, President Richard McCullough dedicated the FSU Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences — the first FSU college named after an alumna. Big news in education research! ?? The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $3.6 million grant to FSU and Ohio State University to support research aimed at improving reading and spelling skills in young children. Over the next five years, Beth Phillips, professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems and faculty associate of the Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR), will help lead Project OPAL, focusing on phonological awareness to help prevent future reading difficulties. We’re excited to spotlight a new book, "Latin* Students in Engineering: An Intentional Focus on a Growing Population,”* co-edited by FSU Professor of Higher Education Dr. Lara Perez-Felkner, Higher Education Ph.D. alumna Ciera Fluker, Ph.D., and Dr. Sarah Rodriguez from Virginia Tech. The book, which explores the experiences and challenges of Latin* students in engineering, is gaining national attention and garnered praise from experts in the STEM, engineering, and higher education fields.
