New Bike Lane, Same Stunning Views! Seattle’s new 1.2-mile protected bike lane along Alaskan Way is officially open, creating a safer and more sustainable route through the city! This, along with other recent improvements like Overlook Walk, is making the waterfront more accessible for everyone. At FSi Engineers, we value sustainability and smart urban design. With several of our employees biking to work, we’re especially excited to see investments that support clean transportation and multimodal connectivity. These bike lanes run right past our office on Pier 54, and we love seeing folks taking advantage of this exciting addition to our waterfront. With more bike lane expansions coming soon, Seattle is moving toward a future where biking, walking, and public transit are safer and more accessible than ever. #NationalTransitWeek #PublicTransit #TransitInfrastructure #SustainableTransit #TransitForAll #ConnectingCommunities

Have you heard? It’s National Transit Appreciation Week! March 16-22, we recognize and celebrate everyone who contributes to the operation of our local transit systems. ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? At FSi Engineers, we’re proud to support transit agencies like King County Metro Transit, a client we’ve partnered with for decades on over 100 projects. We also work with Sound Transit, Pierce Transit, Whatcom Transportation Authority, and Washington State Ferries. From small site investigations to designing a new $450M base for electric buses, we’re committed to helping transit agencies meet sustainability goals, improve efficiency, and extend the life of their facilities. We also provide ORCA cards to all FSi employees who work in our Seattle office, our way of supporting our local transit systems further, and encouraging our employees to use this fantastic transit system we are so lucky to have. How will you celebrate National Transit Week? I wrote an op-ed on natural gas customer charges and adopting heat pumps for lower energy bills, and why 2025 is my year to remove my furnace in my century old home. Yay! See: https://lnkd.in/ex4xzNDC Side bonus that got cut in the editing—by removing gas service, I can get rid of that incredibly ugly gas meter BGE mounted to the front of my house (right up front, next to the porch steps) when they did the STRIDE piping upgrades in my neighborhood.

Another Certification Unlocked! FSi’s own Ben Roush just earned his Fire Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council, making him one of only three certified professionals in Maryland and one of just two in Baltimore! This is a big deal for our presence in the city, especially since this certification is now required for reviewing fire protection plans for high-rises, large assembly spaces, hotels, multifamily buildings, and more. If you know Ben, this latest certification won’t surprise you. In his 22-year career, he has stacked up an almost unfair number of credentials, including Mechanical Professional Engineer, Fire Protection Engineer, LEED AP BD+C, Certified Commissioning Professional, ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional and Building Energy Modeling Professional, ICC Certified Energy Plans Examiner, and now ICC Fire Protection Plans Examiner (F3). As one of the rare professionals licensed as both a mechanical and fire protection engineer and a Certified Commissioning Professional, Ben brings a 360-degree perspective to every project. But he doesn’t just collect credentials, he puts them to work. Whether he’s leading FSi’s teams in commissioning, energy modeling, fire protection, or sustainability, Ben is always looking for smarter, more efficient, and more innovative ways to solve problems. Have a question about a niche building system? Ask Ben. We all do. Congrats, Ben! #EngineeringExcellence #BuildingSafety #FireProtection #MEPEngineering #FireProtectionEngineering #EnergyEfficiency #SustainableDesign #FSiEngineers

Learn what's coming in the next version of LEED! Ben Roush will be presenting at this year's Greenbuild International Conference & Expo - https://lnkd.in/ehUi2aZ ) on LEED v5 and decarbonization in the built environment. In the meantime, he has been staying busing talking about decarbonization and building energy performance standards (BEPS) - which are in place in both Washington and Maryland, where our offices are located.
PE-ME, FPE, LEED AP BD+C, ASHRAE BEMP and BEAP, Certified Commissioning Professional, Certified Energy Plans Examiner, Fire Plans Examiner (F3) Principal at FSi engineers
It’s been an interesting few weeks on the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) front. Two weeks ago I was on a panel (and last minute promoted to moderator) to talk about planning and implementation of electrification projects at the annual Maryland Clean Energy Center (Maryland Clean Energy Center) conference. Last week I spoke along with representatives from MDE on BEPS for the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers yearly conference (Maryland Society of Professional Engineers). Yesterday was particularly exciting, speaking at the Public Service Comission (who regulates utility companies in Maryland) in favor of expanding Empower utility incentives for decarbonization measures, and that those incentives should specifically not include new fossil fuel equipment. These incentives will be a massive help to fund BEPS based electrification in existing buildings. I’ll be speaking on a panel at Greenbuild in a few weeks on LEED v5 and decarbonization, as the vice chair of the energy and atmosphere technical advisory committee. Hope to see you there.
