Fostering youth development, healthy living, & social responsibility in the great outdoors - for all!

关于我们

Established in 1901 as one of the nation's first summer camps, Frost Valley YMCA now provides four seasons of outdoor, experiential and educational opportunities. Frost Valley YMCA is a 6,000 acre residential camping, environmental education, and conference center located in the heart of the “forever wild” Catskill Mountain Preserve. The Frost Valley YMCA mission is to put Judeo/Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. In pursuit of this mission, we strive to embody the following core values: Caring: We go beyond ourselves to do what we can for all. Diversity: We promote a culture of respect and value diversity. Honesty: We maintain the trust of surrounding community, guests and fellow staff through honesty with ourselves and others. Inclusiveness: We open hearts and minds to all people. Respect: We feel and show honor and consideration for others, the environment, health and ourselves through our actions, services and deeds. Responsibility: We hold ourselves accountable for what we do, accept results of the actions we take, and seek to fulfill expectations of our staff and guests Stewardship: We strive to be conscientious caretakers of our facilities, natural resources, environment, community and each other, now and in the future. Community: We work together to create shared connections. As a charitable organization, we raise funds throughout the year for camperships that cover the costs of camp for children and families who would not otherwise be able to attend. • Congratulations to Erik Franson for being nominated as Frost Valley YMCA's Employee of the Month for January! Erik joined the Frost Valley team in 2019. He was first drawn to Frost Valley when friends who worked here told him what a great atmosphere it was. Erik's favorite memory at Frost Valley is going snow tubing with friends when he was in school at Tri-Valley. Erik feels that Frost Valley is important because of our work helping less fortunate kids come experience camp fun. As the Maintenance Supervisor, Erik is responsible for keeping the lights on, the vehicles moving, and generally making sure our facilities are running efficiently so that the rest of the staff can do their job. His colleagues describe Erik as working with unwavering dedication, flexibility, and exemplary leadership. Congratulations, Erik, and thanks for all your hard work!

Congratulations to Danielle Macedonio Vankeuren for being nominated as Frost Valley YMCA's Employee of the Month for December! As a child, Danielle attended camp at Frost Valley. She fondly remembers making new friends and spending time outdoors, exploring nature and learning new things. She appreciates that Frost Valley continues to make all feel welcomed and included. The opportunity for growth and advancement drew her to become a part of the staff team in 2022. As a Housekeeping Team Lead, she ensures that our facilities are clean and up to a high standard for our guests all while modeling our core values. Danielle consistently shows up for the Frost Valley community every day with a smile. You can tell she truly cares about her colleagues, coworkers, and our guests. She is a model employee: a hard worker, committed to doing whatever it takes to get a job done. Her peers describe her as supportive, dedicated and positive.

A wonderfull presentation and precisely the focus that we should have - I we were struck with the similarities in language from our recent Strategic Plan. Yes, FOR ALL is language that all of us use at the Y but in our recent plan we emphasize the need to create community. We want to be FOR ALL, a place where all feel they can belong, AND be a place were we focus on what unites us, not what divides us. Belonging looks different for everyone. Thank you Suzanne McCormick for leading the way in this conversation. Watch the video - I bet you will find yourself agreeing with the urgent need to find common ground, during this time of turmoil. Eboo Patel at some point states, and I am paraphrasing here: This is hard! You think Rocket Science is Hard? This is harder! Agreed. It's also more crucial to our country, and what is stands for. Team Up, everyone!

Began the new year on an inspirational note by chatting virtually this week with fellow nonprofit leaders and Team Up Project partners Jonathan Reckford of Habitat for Humanity International, Kerry Alys Robinson of Catholic Charities USA, and Eboo Patel of Interfaith America . Team Up’s goal is to empower people to build connections across differences with others in their communities. Or as Eboo put it so poignantly: We?are working to widen the welcomes and strengthen the bridges. We’re growing our reach with more projects and teams in more communities?this year. Thank you to the nearly 700 leaders from across our organizations who joined the conversation. And a very big thank you to our wonderful moderator Michael D. Smith of AmeriCorps. CEO at Frost Valley

I recently returned from Washington, DC, where I had the privilege of joining a panel on "The Power and Future of Camp" at the annual National Summer Learning Association Summer Learning Summit. It was both an honor and a joy to sit on a panel so skillfully led by Scott Brody and to hear Tierra Stewart speak with such passion about the critical importance of finding community, especially in a time when so many people seem to feel adrift. As we explored the future of camp, Avi Orlow shared a thought-provoking idea inspired by David Brooks’ concept of the “resume self” vs. the “eulogy self” (link at the bottom). Avi spoke about how camps can reflect on this idea—not just as a way of differentiating but perhaps even blending these two selves to enhance our roles as educators. It was a powerful conversation, deeply relevant to our times and to the evolving mission of camp communities and camp work. (Thank you Aaron Philip Dworkin for having us!) After the panel, though, in an informal conversation, a comment came up that has stuck with me ever since. I won’t share who said it, but it has haunted me (paraphrasing here): “When the election is over, we will have to reckon with the notion of character.” As a father, a teacher, and a leader of an organization dedicated to helping kids thrive, this sentiment crystallized something I’ve been feeling for days. The blatant callousness, cruelty, and the perverse pleasures in offending or belittling others on display in the last months, seem to have come without consequence. Before you’re tempted to explain why this isn’t true, just pause and consider this: character should matter, and in this case, character should have been disqualifying. Plain and simple. So as I’ve said before: brace yourselves. We’re about to find out whether the ugliness we’ve been witnessing was just campaign posturing—or whether it reveals something much deeper about who WE are. https://lnkd.in/eaD4DW7n
