  • #ZeroWasteHawai?i was co-founded by a handful of folks to support equitable and healthy communities and ecosystems in Hawai?i by minimizing the negative impacts associated with our linear economy. Linear economies operate in a take-make-waste framework and are associated with the kind of hyper-consumerism and over-production that have damaged the health of people and the ?āina (here in Hawai?i and across the globe). To achieve this, Zero Waste Hawai?i designs and supports models of business and economy that (re)build circular and regeneartive models of living. These models operate in balance with the well-being of ?āina and the health of our ecosystems and communties. At its core zero waste is about doing more with less and living with the limits of the land, values that were well imbedded in ancestral systems across the world--including in ?ike of Hawai?i's kupuna. We have focused on building capacity and foundation to do this work on O?ahu and Maui. In our collaboration we have: ? Connected with thousands of community members ? Supported the start up of #ZeroWasteO?ahu and #ZeroWasteMaui ? Held the an inter-island Hawai?i Zero Waste Summit, which brought together over 40 leaders, thinkers, and creators from across the Pae ?āina to focus on zero waste solutions ? Completed waste audits and waste stream reduction recommendations for the Marriott Maui Ocean Club and the Hawai?i Vistor Convention Bureau ? Played key role in passing O?ahu's Bill 40 (one of the strongest single-use plastic reduct bills in the world), of our island communties. a take-make-founders in order to elevate low-impact consumpwanted to elevate ? Secured a federal grant to pursue a demonstration project for O?ahu's first reusable take-out container program

  • #WhoWeFundFridays Hawaii Alliance for Progressive Action (HAPA) HAPA builds capacity for Hawaii’s communities to protect the health of their land, water and democracy through the Kuleana Academy candidates training program, grassroots coalition building, civic-engagement workshops and legislative advocacy. Not everyone wishes to learn how to run for office. Some people just want to get more involved in the civic square. For those folks who want to learn the “how-to’s” and basic fundamentals of community organizing, advocacy and political campaigns, #HAPA offers workshops in rural Oahu and on neighbor islands. HAPA meets Hawaii residents where they are at. HAPA’s legislative advocacy is conducted in partnership with other members of the #ProtectOurKeikiCoalition, which include the Center for Food Safety Hawai?i, #HawaiiSEED, along with beekeepers, parents, pediatricians and other healthcare providers. The coalition continued its advocacy for bills to regulate pesticides and promote regenerative agriculture. In addition, HAPA engaged 20 other legislative-advocacy groups as part of the “Common Good Coalition,” to prioritize bills that broadly ranged from social justice, to environmental concerns to economic justice. • #WhoWeFundFridays BEYOND PESTICIDES https://lnkd.in/ey6SjV2A Hawai’i's #BeyondPesticides Program focuses on decreasing toxic pesticide use on our islands, using a strategic mix of policy work, public pressure, education, and support of organic farmers and landscapers. We are working with Maui, Kaua'i and Hawai'i County governments to reduce pesticide use in public spaces, and with local organic farmers to get them the support they need to succeed and expand. Hawai'i's food security and economic vulnerabilities that have been exposed due to COVID19 make this work more important than ever. We helped launch the Maui Hub, a new non-profit farm to consumer sales platform, built as a COVID 19 crisis response to support our local farmers, that will also serve as a permanent part of Maui's local food infrastructure. With all of the aid and interest in expanding agriculture in Hawai'i, we must remain vigilant. NOW IS THE TIME for real, collaborative systems change, responsible increase in food production, & active support of farmers who are growing solutions to climate change, not increasing chemical intensive mono crop farms.

#WhoWeFundFridays Hawai‘i Center for Food Safety (HCFS) has supported the growing movement of community members fighting for a safe and biodiverse food system in Hawai’i for well over a decade. #HCFS has filmed and produced 8 episodes of #RegeneratingParadise, a video series highlighting the changemakers within Hawai‘i’s food system. In season one, the series focused on the Soil and Climate connection, highlighting projects that take carbon sequestration through soil health seriously. Projects included #GreenRowsFarms (Oahu), #KupunaFarms (Maui), and #Teraviva (Maui, Oahu) In 2020, they have released their second season which focuses on the Soil and Gut Health connection. Featured projects include Waipā Foundation (Kauai), #ChangingTidesFoundation’s #CompostCollective (Oahu), The Hawai'i Institute of Pacific Agriculture(Hawai‘i Island), and MA'O Organic Farms. We also created a Regenerating Paradise report explaining the links between soil health with carbon sequestration. In addition, the legal and scientific expertise that #HCFS provides to the Hawai‘i food movement plays a key role in providing credible and trusted consultation to both decision makers and community stakeholders, for example in the areas of legal expertise on pesticide regulations, bill drafting for the #ProtectOurKeikiCoalition, government agency watchdogging for compliance, and exposing corporate influence on policymakers through campaign contributions.
