What resources for journalists will be available in the EU Competence Centre for Science Communication? And which tools will it offer to science journalists? In a conversation with SWIM - Science Writers in Italy at their annual assembly in Milan, COALESCE and FRONTIERS shared their opportunities to enhance quality science journalism. ? If, on one side, COALESCE is developing specific tools to be readily available also to non-science journalists through the Competence Centre, FRONTIERS helps science journalists to live and work closely with scientists, through a 3-month residency program to foster positive interactions between journalists and research institutions. Today I started my three-month FRONTIERS Fellowship at CIC bioGUNE in the lush hills near Bilbao, Spain. For the next few months, I’ll be learning about the research conducted at BioGUNE, speaking with scientists, and giving my own talks about the relationship between science and journalism, while attempting to improve my Spanish (and Euskera, if I can!). ?Mantente atento para más!

I am reporting on the Italian edition of Scientific American about a cutting-edge study dealing with paleoclimate reconstruction of an event that could be a template for what may happen in the future, with particular #climate and #environmental impacts in Northern Europe. During the Last Interglacial, melting #Arctic #sea #ice likely disrupted ocean circulation (#AMOC), causing temperatures in northern Europe to plunge. If this pattern recurs, it could trigger major shifts in Atlantic ocean circulation, carrying potentially severe and irreversible consequences. The planet is vulnerable to shifts in temperature and ice cover. By 2050, summers in the Arctic Ocean are expected to be ice-free. I am always fascinated by how scientists come to some conclusions, the iC3 Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate (Polar Research) research team used a combination of biological tracers from Nordic Sea sediment cores. In particular, they studied tiny creatures whose skeletons can be preserved in ocean sediments, the #foraminifera. They preserve ancient ocean data thanks to which, the team reconstructed past sea surface temperatures, salinity, freshwater sources, and deep water formation processes.
