Affordable housing isn’t just about homes—it’s about community, stability, and opportunity. Here's why it matters: ?? Strengthens Families: Affordable housing gives families a foundation to thrive. Parents can focus on their jobs and kids can excel in school without the stress of housing instability. ?? Boosts the Local Economy: When residents have affordable living options, they can spend more in local shops, restaurants, and businesses—fueling growth for our entire community. ?? Builds a Brighter Future: Stable homes create hope and opportunity, helping individuals and families break the cycle of poverty. ?? Fosters a Stronger Community: Affordable housing brings diversity and vitality to Lowell, making it a place where everyone can belong and contribute. When families face the constant stress of unstable housing, it creates a ripple effect that directly impacts our children's education. The fear of eviction, lack of a stable address, and the constant search for safe and affordable housing creates immense stress for children, making it incredibly difficult for them to focus in class and absorb new information. Unstable housing situations often lack reliable access to internet and quiet spaces conducive to studying, making completing homework a significant challenge. Furthermore, frequent moves due to housing instability can disrupt a child's education, leading to missed school days and difficulty keeping up with coursework. For many in our community, finding an affordable place to live is challenging. With increased rent payments, it can be hard to make ends meet. When housing costs are too high, it puts a huge strain on families, forcing tough choices between paying rent and putting food on the table. This also makes it harder for people to get a good education, find a job, and even see a doctor. In fact, a study done by Bowen National Research shows that in Kent County, outside of Grand Rapids, there is a housing gap of 5,107 rental units over the next five years. We need more affordable housing options in Lowell so everyone has a chance to thrive and build a strong community.
