    When I first started acting, I thought being on stage was about commanding the spotlight. I believed I had to impress - to look confident, sound polished, and deliver my lines flawlessly. But the truth I learned on stage is the same truth we share with leaders today: It’s not about you. It’s about your audience. Whether you’re pitching to win a deal, rallying your team, or presenting to stakeholders, the biggest mistake you can make is listening to yourself rather than your audience. It’s so easy to get caught up in self-orientation. Focusing on how you sound, how you look, or whether you’ll be judged. But leadership communication demands something different: clarity, credibility, reliability, and intimacy. These are the pillars of trust, and without them, your message won’t land.     I always ask this question on our public speaking programme: “What’s the difference between a good speaker and a great one?” Here's my take. Good speakers deliver information. They’re polished, confident, and technically sound. They follow a script or presentation seamlessly. Great speakers? They do something more. They inspire. They connect. They leave you wanting more. You feel like you know them. ?? If you have kids, you’ve likely experienced this in the last few days - at the Christmas school play. The narrator no one can hear, an overenthusiastic wise man belting out Jingle Bells, and the occasional angel with the stage presence to rival a pro. It’s not about perfect lines or polished delivery - it’s the raw authenticity (and a little chaos) that makes them unforgettable and drives that emotional connection. That raw authenticity - the kind that makes a room sit up and pay attention - is something we all start out with. But, sadly, over time, we’re taught to polish, rehearse, and “get it right.” And while there’s value in preparation, the cost is often that natural, human connection. Great communication isn’t about perfection. It’s about rediscovering that authenticity and learning how to bring it back into every conversation, every presentation, and every stage you step onto.     "I'm your colleague, we work together, I don't want to see or hear about your personal life. Keep your home life at home and your work life at work." I thought this kind of thinking was a thing of the past, but sadly not. I heard it this week. Why should anyone have to hide who they are? Through our research, we have found that organisations where people are able to be themselves are significantly more productive. Sounds obvious, right? Every Friday I work from my parents house, without their support I wouldn't be able to deliver on my professional responsibilities. If my son misses me and wants to sit on my lap during a meeting he can. Allowing this doesn't mean I'm neglecting my work, in fact it's quite the opposite. As a business owner it's vital that FROM:TODAY practice what it preaches. So for anyone who works for us, or is a client of ours, please don't feel you have to fake it, ever. If you've got kids, parents, cats, dogs or anything or anyone else who wants to say hello when we're talking then please don't apologies, we're happy to meet them. ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? We’ve just finished our final Public Speaking Masterclass of the year, and I’m always fascinated by the challenges people face and the advice they’ve been given. Things like “fake it till you make it” or “picture the audience in their underwear” might sound like quick fixes, but they miss what public speaking is really about. It’s not about tricks or trying to perform. It's about showing up as yourself. Speaking with authenticity, connecting with your audience, and delivering your message with clarity and purpose. That’s where real impact happens. To everyone who joined us today, thank you. These sessions always brighten my day.
