关于我们
Friends of the Children - Tampa Bay breaks the cycle of generational poverty by giving children facing the greatest challenges the support they need to create a new story. By pairing them with a caring, professional mentor that stays with them from kindergarten through high school graduation (12.5 years) these children are given the support they need to become leaders in their community! Our model is courageous, unique, and proven. We provide each child with a salaried, professional mentor, who we call a Friend, from kindergarten through graduation. 12 ? years. No matter what. Moving mentoring out of the volunteer realm ensures the quality, consistency, and commitment needed to help the child create a new story and break the cycle of poverty. We have many stories of the highest-risk children realizing their potential: ? 83% graduate from high school ? 93% avoid the juvenile justice system ? 98% avoid early parenting Friends of the Children was founded in 1993 by Portland entrepreneur Duncan Campbell. Campbell was inspired by his own troubled childhood in NE Portland to start a revolutionary new program to help at-risk children in the same neighborhood where he grew up. In 1992, The Institute for Children conducted extensive research on resilient youth and factors that influenced their success. The research discovered that the single most important factor that fosters resiliency in at-risk children is a caring and supportive relationship with an adult. Intervention and support must begin early, continue as the child matures, and consistently address the needs of the whole person. In 1993, Friends of the Children opened its doors in Portland with three friends serving 24 children. Today, Friends of the Children has five national chapters and two affiliates providing mentorship and support for vulnerable youth for 12 and a half years (from kindergarten though high school)-- no matter what.

??Student of the Month!!! "As a Friend, the most we can often hope for is that we impart on our youth the ability to make good decisions when we are not present with them to offer our direct guidance. I was made aware of several of these instances in the last month involving one of my young achievers. A bit of background is necessary – my youth has never known his biological father. His father was incarcerated when he was born. My youth lived with his grandmother until she passed away and he has been with his aunt (his father’s sister) for the last 8 years. His father recently got out of prison lives with my youth’s home now. His father also battles with schizophrenia, but initially seemed to be slowly building a bit of a healthy relationship with the youth. Recently, the youth shared with me that his father offered him some alcohol while at a family event. His aunt was not present. The youth said “no” and told me he doesn’t want to live like that. I gave him the opportunity to tell his aunt about it, which he did. She spoke with his father and told him not to undo all the progress we have made raising a teenager that has resisted these temptations so far. A week later, the youth informed me that his father has been coming home stoned and making the youth make him protein drinks and putting vodka in them. He told me and his aunt again that it makes him uncomfortable. His aunt moved the youth to another aunt’s home while she is away, to ensure his safety. While away, his father called him and asked if he could provide pee for him for a drug test. My young man hung up the phone and called me. It is heartbreaking that my youth was open to allowing a relationship build with his biological father. He has, however, made smart, difficult choices about communication and the use of drugs/alcohol. Amidst all this, he has still maintained an A/B GPA as a Junior in HS. I have no doubt that he will continue to remain strong with his virtues against drugs and temptation." -Friend, Ken
