We are a nonprofit community-based organization that has been providing programs and services to families and individuals involved in the criminal justice system since 1955. We understand that there is a cycle of crime and delinquency, and we believe that the cycle can be broken. We believe in respect for others; in the capacity of human beings to change; and in the importance of the family and the community in the development of resilient, responsible and capable people. Our Family Liaison Services include assistance for inmates and family members: addressing family issues and providing guidance in preparation for return to the community. Working one-on-one with inmates, our trained and experienced Case Managers provide critical intervention in family emergencies and guidance in dealing with children’s fears and apprehensions. Our Parenting Program for Incarcerated Parents, offered in all California state prison, provides high risk parents the opportunity to provide their children with the best parenting possible. This program provides the skills and motivation to parent effectively from a distance and to reunify successfully with the family, after release. Visitor Centers, operated by Friends Outside at every California state prison, provide assistance to families who are visiting friends and family members. These Visitor Centers provide childcare, transportation, information and resources, and a restful and welcoming place to stop for a moment before and after visits. Our Creative Conflict Resolutions Program addresses the special treatment needs of the violent offender. We believe that change is possible, and current research on our CCR program supports that belief. Interpersonal and family violence is of particular concern, and CCR is a proven method of addressing violence within the family context...even gang-related violence.
