Purnima Rani, from Sonamugari village in Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira district, has transformed her life from hardship to success. Born into a poor farming family, she faced numerous challenges, including an early marriage at 14. Despite these obstacles, Purnima's determination never wavered. Joining Friendship’s SED Sector and the Farmers’ Club was a turning point. She learned about vegetable cultivation, poultry farming, and organic compost production. With Friendship's support, she started her own business, selling earthworms and organic compost. Today, Purnima is a successful entrepreneur, earning BDT 10,000-12,000 monthly. Her family no longer struggles with poverty, and they can afford their children's education. A lesson of empowerment! A&O Shearman Luxembourg celebrated Women’s Day with an inspiring presentation by Runa Khan, the founder of Friendship NGO, an international organisation dedicated to creating a world where everyone, especially the hard-to-reach and unaddressed living in remote islands in Bangladesh, has equal opportunities to live with dignity. Interviewed by Reine Pfister, Runa shared her incredible journey with us, delivering powerful messages of engagement, kindness, and hope. Her dedication and achievements as a social entrepreneur have earned her numerous international awards, including the prestigious IDB Prize for Women’s Contribution to Development. The powerful presentation was followed by a quiz about the evolution of women's rights around the world, an opportunity to learn a bit more and to realize that there is still a long way to go. During last year’s catastrophic floods, she played a crucial role in disaster response, ensuring the safe evacuation of 350 families and disseminating early warnings. Despite initial skepticism as a female volunteer in a conservative community, Rozina’s dedication earned her respect and also a formal role with Friendship as an FCGA under the ASD Project, where she now trains others and advocates for women in leadership roles. Her journey highlights the power of grassroots leadership in building climate resilience. One of the girl students who participated in Friendship’s ‘Coding for Kids’ once believed her future was limited, but the opportunity to learn coding has changed everything for her. By learning Scratch, Python, and Full-Stack Development, she is breaking barriers, proving that girls from marginalized communities can be creators, innovators, and leaders in tech. A total of 44 students from 16 secondary schools in marginalized and climate change-impacted areas participated in the coding project activities, with 50% of the students being girls. In three years, the girls will be freelancing, interning, and earning—building a future once beyond their reach.
