Friends of the Children breaks the cycle of generational poverty by giving children facing the highest-risks the ability to create a new story. This brings life transformation to the highest-risk children and tremendous economic impact to our community. Our model is courageous, unique, and proven. We provide each child with a salaried, professional mentor, who we call a Friend, from kindergarten through graduation. 12 ? years. No matter what. Moving mentoring out of the volunteer realm ensures the quality, consistency, and commitment needed to help the child create a new story and break the cycle of poverty. We have many stories of the highest-risk children realizing their potential: ? 83% graduate from high school, while 60% have parents who did not. ? 93% avoid the juvenile justice system, while 50% have parents who were incarcerated. ? 98% avoid early parenting, while 85% were born to a teen parent. Friends of the Children was founded in 1993 by Portland entrepreneur Duncan Campbell. Campbell was inspired by his own troubled childhood in NE Portland to start a revolutionary new program to help at-risk children in the same neighborhood where he grew up. In 1992, The Institute for Children conducted extensive research on resilient youth and factors that influenced their success. The research discovered that the single most important factor that fosters resiliency in at-risk children is a caring and supportive relationship with an adult. Intervention and support must begin early, continue as the child matures, and consistently address the needs of the whole person. In 1993, Friends of the Children opened its doors in Portland with three friends serving 24 children. Today Friends reaches thousands of children in over 250 schools in communities across the nation providing mentorship and support for vulnerable youth for 12 and a half years (from kindergarten though high school)-- no matter what.

The tournament will still take place at River Place Country Club, with the same great food, drinks, and pickleball fun, but we will delay the start time to 10:00 am. ? ? Spring break at the Clubhouse was packed with fun, adventure, and a well-earned day of relaxation to close it out! ?? We kicked things off Monday with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a green-themed lunch, and an afternoon at Blazer Tag Adventure Center. ?? Tuesday was Animal Day, featuring cuddles with the adorable crew from Tiny Tails to You and lunch from Ike's Love & Sandwiches and FoodHeads. ? Wednesday got our hearts racing with soccer, four square, hula hoops, and an action-packed trip to Ninja Nation ATX. ?? Thursday was all about Texas, with a visit to Rodeo Austin. ??♀? Today is “Treat Yourself” Friday—yoga, facials, nail polish, movies, and a peaceful stroll through Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy. A huge thank you to our amazing partners who made this week extra special! Special shoutout to Little Deli & Pizzeria for generously donating funds to help provide lunches throughout the week.

Happy birthday to the GOAT, Simone Biles! World Champion gymnast, youth advocate, and a true inspiration, Simone has not only made history in her sport but also helped expand Friends of the Children - Texas with the founding of Friends of the Children - Houston. At the Friends Austin Clubhouse, we’re proud to feature one of her iconic Wheaties boxes with the Friends of the Children logo, recognizing her commitment to breaking cycles of generational poverty. Some of our youth and Friends even had the chance to meet Simone at the Wheaties “Breakfast of Champions,” celebrating her second limited-edition box and the launch of Friends Houston! Thank you, Simone, for being a champion for children as well as a champion for your country!

Help us welcome Jodie McGarity Jr. to the Friends Austin team! Jodie is a native San Antonian, who has lived in the Austin, TX area for over 25 years. Jodie grew up playing sports as a youth, collegiately, and for 4 years professionally in basketball. He mainly desires to give back to his community and empower youth, coaches, and parents to produce a better community, by helping youth feel safe, seen heard, and valued. Jodie owns Texas Disciples Sports & Fitness, where he is a player development coach and fitness trainer. He is also a mentor in the area. Jodie has been training for over 15 years and is passionate about healthy lifestyles through fitness training and proper nutrition. Jodie conducts yearly summer basketball camps and volunteers with nonprofit youth organizations. He currently holds the position of Basketball Director and Head Girls' Basketball Coach for the Austin Royals, a Christian organization for homeschooled athletes. As a Certified Trainer with The Positive Coaching Alliance, Jodie is proud to be a part of an organization that shares his values in youth sports. Jodie is married to his wife Sharla, has 4 adult children, and encourages them to equip, empower, and inspire any environment they are in. Welcome, Jodie!
