We are delighted to introduce our new Program & Operations Specialist, Emma Boydston! Emma has always had a love for helping underserved communities. After graduating from Furman University in South Carolina with a BA in Music, her varied career has included roles in elementary education, music therapy, church music, children’s programming, and nonprofit administration. She has led adult and children’s choirs, taught voice and piano lessons, music therapy classes for adults with disabilities, and computing skills to senior citizens. "It’s been such an honor to work alongside people who are so devoted to the children in our program. Each team member cares deeply and authentically for our youth and I’m glad to be part of such a caring and hard-working team,” she says. Welcome, Emma!

We believe generational change happens one story at a time.
关于我们
Friends of the Children breaks the cycle of generational poverty by giving children facing the highest-risks the ability to create a new story. This brings life transformation to the highest-risk children and tremendous economic impact to our community. Our model is courageous, unique, and proven. We provide each child with a salaried, professional mentor, who we call a Friend, from kindergarten through graduation. 12 ? years. No matter what. Moving mentoring out of the volunteer realm ensures the quality, consistency, and commitment needed to help the child create a new story and break the cycle of poverty. We have many stories of the highest-risk children realizing their potential: ? 83% graduate from high school, while 60% have parents who did not. ? 93% avoid the juvenile justice system, while 50% have parents who were incarcerated. ? 98% avoid early parenting, while 85% were born to a teen parent. Friends of the Children was founded in 1993 by Portland entrepreneur Duncan Campbell. Campbell was inspired by his own troubled childhood in NE Portland to start a revolutionary new program to help at-risk children in the same neighborhood where he grew up. In 1992, The Institute for Children conducted extensive research on resilient youth and factors that influenced their success. The research discovered that the single most important factor that fosters resiliency in at-risk children is a caring and supportive relationship with an adult. Intervention and support must begin early, continue as the child matures, and consistently address the needs of the whole person. In 1993, Friends of the Children opened its doors in Portland with three friends serving 24 children. Today Friends reaches thousands of children in over 250 schools in communities across the nation providing mentorship and support for vulnerable youth for 12 and a half years (from kindergarten though high school)-- no matter what.

At a recent all-staff meeting, Friends Austin honored our Q3 "No Matter What" Award winners. These outstanding team members have embodied our motto of "No Matter What" as they work to ensure that every youth in our program feels safe, seen, and heard. As a symbol of their extraordinary work, they each received a bumblebee: the aerodynamic principle says that the breadth of its wings is too small to keep its body in flight, but a bee doesn't know that — it just knows that it needs to fly despite any difficulty or circumstance. ?? Congratulations to all our Q3 "No Matter What" award winners: Marco, Alex, Adrian, Hector, Daphne, Oliver, Jonathan, Uriel, LaDonna, Anders, and Freddy. We appreciate everything you do!

Proud mentor moment from Friend Alexandria, who recently accompanied two of her youth on a school field trip: “I still remember my fifth-grade canoe field trip and getting to chaperone one with my girls Tijana* and Latona* was super special.” Our Friends are always working with their youth on strengthening nine Core Assets for success, including Positive Relationship Building: “I get along well with others and am able to find people to support me.” Way to go, Tijana and Latona! ?? *Youth name changed for privacy.
