To Preserve, Protect and Beautify Rittenhouse Square Park

关于我们

The Friends of Rittenhouse Square was created in 1976 to address the increasing gap between available city funding and the maintenance needs of Rittenhouse Square. With a mission to “preserve, protect, and beautify” the park, the Friends work in a public-private partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. The Friends fund and manage many programs and projects needed to sustain the Square. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Friends provide funding through membership, special events, private donations, sponsorships, and capital campaigns.

  • Today is Giving Tuesday! Consider using today to support the Friends of Rittenhouse Square and all the work that we do. FRS is responsible for all of the daily maintenance of Rittenhouse Square year round, with no city funding. Supporting the Friends helps to support the upkeep of the park, as well as community events that happen here. Memberships, donations, and volunteers are critical pillars of our organization, and we cannot thank our current supporters enough! In the spirit of giving we encourage you to support FRS and other local parks who keep our public spaces clean and beautiful!

  • December 3rd is Giving Tuesday, but what does that mean? Giving Tuesday is an international movement to encourage people to support their local communities. Here at Friends of Rittenhouse Square we encourage neighbors and friends to donate to our cause of Preserving, Protecting, and Beautifying Rittenhouse Square year round. Take some time leading up to Thanksgiving to consider supporting the community groups that keep our public spaces clean and friendly. We cannot thank you enough for your support and we wish you all a happy Thanksgiving!

  • This past weekend was our Fall Love Your Park Day! Volunteers planted 2500 daffodil bulbs along our north lawn. Keep an eye out for a colorful new patch of flowers this spring. Thank you to all our volunteers! If you'd like to get involved with the friends, check out the volunteer section of our website and sign up for the newsletter. The volunteer newsletter is a monthly announcement of all volunteering opportunities we have coming up!

  • Like many of Rittenhouse Square’s beloved treasures, Cornelia Chapin’s Giant Frog was a gift to the city, made possible through a fundraising campaign by our predecessors at the Rittenhouse Square Improvement Association and the Association for Public Art. Hundreds of citizens came together to place this work where it has been enjoyed by the public for over 80 years. Sadly, the bronze plaque commemorating this extraordinary gift went missing earlier this week, in a disappointing act of vandalism. The plaque was designed by Paul Cret, the architect behind the Square’s design, giving it its own artistic significance. Our mission is to Preserve, Protect and Beautify this beloved Square, and our expertise in this helps us whenever challenges arise. The original drawing for this plaque can be found at the Philadelphia Athenaeum, and we will use this to make an exact replica. A generous donor who loves the Frog as much as we do has already stepped forward to pay for the replacement. If you love the Frog and want to support our work in caring for the Square, please become a member or make a donation to further our mission. Gifts to the Square make an impact for generations to come
